Not overly smart......one decided to take up residence under my shed.

Just refinished a Wing recurve and it was in rhe kitchen. The old lady says a groundhog is in the back yard and........dont you dare shoot it w that bow.

I just said OK and grabbed a Ruger mk 1 and popped him

Was a few yra back.
Not had a chuck move in since ( differe t houses ).

My dad lives in town and saw one in his yard this yr

How smart are they?

A cousin I went groundhog hunting with a number of decades ago put it this way:

We were along the fence line of a large clover field. I had just taken a shot at a groundhog about 50 yards or so out and it disappeared after I took my shot.

I started to get up to check on it when my cousin said "Wait for a bit. If you missed, he'll probably stick his head up in a few minutes looking all around like lightening struck and he'll be "Damn! And not a cloud in the sky!" Then you can take him down. The plus side is that if there are any others in the area, they'll be doing the same thing."

He was right. Another one stuck his head up a few minutes later and I tagged him with my .22 WMR, too. When we checked...they were both dead, the first one having fallen down into his hole.

Was bowhunting deer and on a ridge, looked ino big downed grass area of a kinda sorta swamp and saw a coon. So snuck down....and creeping 50 yards in the open to it. Looked up at me and flattened down.

Had a pink nose. Small female.

I talked softly to it for a while, it was pretty mellow. And then i just eased away.

Mighta been one somebody had rehabd.
Maybe a wild one caught in the open that just gave up?

I dunno.

The piney in one of my deer stands would come right to mw and make all sorts of sounds, not alarm though. I moved that stand.....think he was POd i was up there w him.

Also figured hed tear me up a bit, not like I could do much 20 ft up.

But everytime I hunted he come within 2 ft, above me, behind me or next to me on a fork. He was a bit of a jerk so I moved the stand

I took one in my back yard with a crossbow a couple weeks ago. He came out from under my shed at 5:45pm everyday to taste my tomato plants. So I got my crossbow out, I saw him twice tried to get in location and he got spooked. After that, I swear he didn't keep his pattern. thought I was crazy. Two weeks later, after not keeping his pattern I looked out the back window and there was. Lifted the window slowly and fired, about 12 yards from the house.

Saw another one a week ago, I think this one is under neighbor's shed. He popped his head out, as soon as I moved the blinds to get a better look he bolted. Haven't seen him since.

They may be better educated though in the suburbs just outside of DC.

Good luck to you
