How the heck did my Savage barrel nut come loose?

Torqued it to 30 lb-ft indicated. Virgin range trip and I'm glad I checked if the suppressor was snug before shooting!!! Long car trip to range, did it vibrate??? Had to loosen the barrel a bit to get the bolt back in so I suspect it turned in the car.

I used some Mobile 1 synthetic grease on the threads just like I do with all the ARs I've built. Should it be dry?

Strange . . .

I have not seen the 30 ft-lb quoted. I guarantee the factory setting is more than that! I use at least 100. You are correct to lube the threads before torquing. I personally use Fel-Pro brand anti seize but any lube is better than dry threads.

As far as recoil it has never been fired.

My barrel nut wrench insturctions say 30-40.

I just put a digital hanging scale on the wrench 17 inches from the axis and got between 16 and 17lb when it tripper at 30 lb-ft indicated. That's between 23 and 24 lb-ft actual torque.

On an AR, Its supposed to be torqued to 30ft lbs and then further tightened until the gas tube alignment is correct. Maximum torque for mil spec is 80 ft lbs.

I would say didnt make it tight enough. I would tighten it to 30, then back it off and re torque it to slightly above 30

On an AR, I torque several times to 30, and then to 35 and then the next position. If I go over 50 I'll try another nut.

However this has nothing at all to do with Savages.

I posted the root cause on the 12th. My torque wrench was way off calibration.
