Is there a special tool required to adjust the adjustable rear sights on a S&W 357 mag? It is the target model. I hope the picture shows. My first time uploading a picture.

From your picture, it looks as if you (or someone) may have adjusted the elevation too much and caused it to come off the base that is captured in a slot in the frame. If that is the case and you are unable to adjust for elevation, you will need to remove the small screw that holds the sight to the frame, put the base back on the elevation screw, and re-install the sight assembly.

Other than that it is a screw driver adjustment.

FWIW, those guns came with a screwdriver from the factory. a look around gunbroker and ebay may turn one up...

The screw on the right side of the sight is the windage screw. The rearmost screw on TOP of the rear sight is called the elevation screw.

From my S&W manual (which S&W will send you for free):

"To raise the point of impact, raise the rear sight by turning the elevation screw counterclockwise one or two clicks at a time.

To lower the point of impact, lower the rear sight by turning the elevation screw clockwise one or two clicks at a time.

Move the point of impact right by turning the windage screw clockwise one or two clicks at a time.

Move the point of impact to the left by turning the windagescrew counterclockwise one or two clicks at a time."

The rule of thumb is move the sight in the direction you want the bullet to go. If you want the bullet to move up, adjust the sight up. If you want to move the bullet left, move the sight left.

The windage screw was turning freely (not adjusting) and I didn't realize the elevation was the cause. I lowered the elevation and it now works. Problem solved. Thanks so much to all. Ed.
