I just purchased a CZ 550 FS in 308. The 308 and 243 models have detachable mags. The 6.5, 270, 30-06, etc, have internal mags.

Does anyone know if I can change mine to internal mag? I don't like detachable mags. I'm hoping I can change it. If not, I'll be selling before firing it and getting a different caliber (30-06)with an internal mag.

I'm sure CZ had a good reason to make the short actions detachable, but I definitely don't prefer it.

It'd involve swapping out bottom metal & I'm not aware of any aftermarket replacement with an internal mag system.
It'd also require new mag spring, follower, etc.
I'm not even sure it could be done.

I'd advise just selling the rifle if you can't live with that detachable.

I dislike detachables myself, which is one reason I bought the 550FS in .30-06.

Gorgeous rifle, I'm with you though and prefer an internal to magazine. Granted I have never used a DBM such as the AI system, but I like not having to buy and keep up with additional mags.

Since the action on the 308 isn't actually any shorter than the 30-06, I wonder if the bottom metal is the same size? The 308 would be very short in the internal mag though.

DPris - Could you tell me the distance, screw to screw on the 30-06? I see that CZ sells the bottom metal.

I would cal CZ and ask them. It probably can be done by getting the bottom metal, magazine body and follower from the 30-06, or the CZ custom shop may have 308 specific parts available. I would call before tearing one of those beautiful rifles apart. Good luck!

Wisco,
That'd involve trundling down to the vault, digging the rifle out, measuring it, and trundling back upstairs again.

This is Sunday, a day of rest for us lazy old farts. :)

Seriously, best bet would be to just call CZ tomorrow & ask.
