why detachable mags. in tactical bolt guns?

Back to ACP's question in the OP, it seems reasonable enough to assert that using a DBM has its benefits as outlined by several posters who use them to positive effect in hunting, target, and gaming applications. While some of us prefer (or are too cheep/obtuse to see these benefits) internal magazines, ultimately the individual must make the tactical decision that suits the rifle's purpose.

Maybe we could define tactical as purpose-built for practical application during hostile or volitile combat scenarios. OR...or we could all eat Lucky Charms knowing full well what was meant. I've used many an improvised hammer and never was it tactical!

Here's a hunting related advantage for the DBM.

In some locales it's illegal to be hunting with a loaded gun in a moving vehicle. If you're driving down a dirt road, fire break, or in a boat running down a bayou, and you're presented with a target, it's a lot easier to stop and slap in a magazine than fiddling with lose rounds.

Nature Boy...........I can guarantee .....I can get a round faster into an internal magazine...than fiddling about getting a separate box magazine lined up and locked in...when the first shot is needed in a hurry....

I personally have no issues with a detachable box magazine shooting from prone. Since we are talking bolt guns, a ten round magazine of .308 does not extend below elbow height or bipod height.

Now if shooting prone off a bag of some sort, you lose a little forend length from the mag sticking out, but you just stick your bag in front of the magazine.

Perhaps people are thinking of 30 round AR type magazines?

I don't doubt you ROAshooter, particularly if we are talking only one round.

However, if you needed a follow up shot, I think the DBM would be quicker (for me and my fat fingers).

depends on the details. if i'm laying prone on the ground, round in hand, gun on target, sure. if i'm trying to reload one more round while running between barricades, i'd opt for the mag
