How to dispose of old ammo?

That's some ugly ammo. It would be pretty easy to reclaim the shot if you wanted. Sprinkle the powder on your lawn while it's raining and it would make good fertilizer.

Toss them a handfull at a time into a burn barrel with a good hot fire.

They pop off but it is really just the brass case ruputureing, the bullet goes nowhere without a barrel and chamber to direct the presure.

For safety you want to be a bit away from things and don't stand with your face hanging over the barrel.

To me tossing them into the trash is asking for trouble

Walnut shell media in a tumbler will polish those bad boys right up.
Don't forget to add a dryer sheet to help with the clean up.

:p
Seriously though, that round looks worse than the zombies it was designed to destroy.

See if you have a reloader near you. I would save the lead and bullets, dump the powder in the yard and put the rest in the scrap bucket.

I disposed of 50 rotted paper shotshells just yesterday. Using pliers, I salvaged the lead shot, and threw the rest of the shell in the trash. They will be burned in our local garbage-to-energy plant.

With the huge incinerators, ammo isn't even a blip on a radar screen.

I've had old ammo that started to look funky and left it with my local police department.
I've also had old ammo that I dumped into an old spetic tank that was about to be crushed and backfilled.
At one old range I used to shoot at, the old timers would toss their duds into the swamp next to the range. Now that I live in a coastal town, I'd probably dispose of them offshore and let mother natures salty sea strip them down over time.

Warning though: sea water takes alot of time, more than you'd think. Local fisherman dragged up an old bomb of some kind in a net last year. He didn't know what it was, no markings, thought it was some kind of cylinder, dragged it on board and brought back to shore for scrap. Trailered it to the scrap yard who bought it and started cutting it up with a torch when the thing started burning and sparking and basically scared the cr@p out of everybody. They had to evacuate a few blocks and call the bomb squad!

Put some light penetrating oil (diesel works too) in a coffe can and toss the bad ammo in there for a week. That will ruin the primers and powder. Then toss it out with the garbage...

The local police take it for free, so that is where the bad stuff went. Now I'm left with dozens of good rounds that I can't shoot, which I'm told is bad luck, hmm....
