The only thing I've done differently is to put a little sealant around the screw holes in order to keep the watertight integrity of the can after drilling.
(A rubber gasket made from an old inner-tube works also...)
Done it for years. Only I use a different gate latch. Get the small round ones and you don't have to drill the hole in the ammo can latch bigger. Just have to put a spacer behind it to get it to stand off enough for the hole on the post to clear the latch.
