How to measure your barrel Contour

Hello all I recently started a thread and I am in the process of getting ready to order a barrel I’d really like to match the barrel contour I have on the gun now if I can’t match it exactly I’d like to get as close as possible


So my question is How do I go about measuring my current barrel contour? Do I have to measure in multiple places? Thanks for your help all!

Here are a couple of barrel contour charts used by PacNor and E R Shaw. The easiest approach would be to use the same or similar measurement points, preferably including a line drawing for clarity:

Yes, you do have to measure multiple places, but makers will typically have descriptions of their barrels which show how you’d have to measure yours to pick a matching contour.

Some makers, like Shilen, do offer Savage contours, which might make your life easier.

Also to what's posted above, some barrel makers will match your current contour if you send the barrel in. PacNor for example will match whatever you have or even do a custom contour if they don't offer what you're looking for.

It's the route I took with one of my rebarrel jobs, the fee to match was something like $35.00
