I need some help, I have a euroarms '58 remington clone. Nice pistol, but it shoots very, very high. I want to replace the front sight with a taller one I have. The sight seems to be dovetailed in, I can make out the faint outline of the dovetail. I have been hammering like crazy on this dang thing, but no dice, it didn't move, not even 1/1000th from what I can tell. What am I missing? I'm assuming that the sight went in from the right, so I should be tapping it that way. I tried the other way too. I tried heating the barrel in case it was glued down.

Hopefully someone know what to do, this is getting silly.

Are you prepared to cut a dove tail if it turns out that there isn't one? To put it differently do you have the tooling to do a dovetail? You can get a guide and use files if you have to. If it was mine and I had everything I needed I would just us a cutoff wheel in a dremel and cut through the sight length wise. It should fall out then. But maybe it's silver soldered into place. If it is silver soldered into place you will need to heat it up over a thousand degrees. This is way more then a propane torch will do. You need a gas welding torch to heat it up enough to melt the solder. If it was me I would be trying to contact euroarms and see if the sight is silver soldered on. I think if it had been drifted into place you would have moved it with all your hammering. Here is the email for euroarms:

After you hear from them post back what they told you so all can know. Thanks.

Good luck.

Thanks I'll try their email. I didn't want to use the welding torch unless I have to , I'll email and see what they say. If there is no dovetail (I swear I can see the seam) I can have a guy cut one no sweat.

The sight should come out LEFT to Right as there is/may be an imperceptable drift in the slot. As in Trapezoidal cut. And if used, someone may have silver soldered it in place, or used red loctite. Then you need heat. I would cut the sight apart only as the last resort.
