I have McDowells A Study of Colt Conversions and other Percussion Pistols Book and the recoil shield is pictured in the Rem. NMA section along with cylinder dimensions and pictures. There are several 44 CF conversions shown, both factory(S&W) and Frontier Gunsmith pieces.

I have also owned a couple or three Original '58 Rem. Conversions that were done that way.

The rear of the cylinder will be machined off to almost the lockup slots leaving the pawl(like Kirst Cylinders) and a disc that depth with a hole to pass the pawl, silversoldered or brazed to the cylinder then the whole cylinder will be drilled thru and opened to approximately .453 nom. (that allows 44 Colt Brass to chamber.) the pawl will be relieved like the Kirst cylinders are to allow for the cartridge rim to seat.
