A .22lr upper/conversion kit and a bunch of 20+ rnd Mags. That way when /if you run out of .223 you would be able to use the most prevelant ammo available.

+1
Extra mags, a good sling, ammo, and practice will do you much more good then anything you can bolt on it.

Oh!
For SHTF, you might want some extra CR2032 batteries, now that you have a sight that has to have them to work when the SHTF.

Quick-Shop won't have them in stock when you loot it to get toilet paper.

ok thanks every one yes practice is every thing i hope i like my new sight so i can just startt buying ammo and some handguns for my doughter and i.

Most important thing is the nut behind the butt. Take a good carbine class...

You need a cleaning kit and a spare parts kit of commonly broken parts and a bunch of ammo and an AR course.

All the other "stuff" isn't actually needed (unless you want to be one of the morons that spend a ton of money on gear they can't actually use in a crisis).

consider, where are your spare batteries
have you ever carried one for a long walk??

really, a good gun isn't CLOSE to the first consideration
I'd rather talk about food security and waste management (do you think you water is flowing?)

CMMG .22 conversion really is nice to have
familiarity with your weapon ammo and mags

Congratulations on the new arrival.

Lets all hope if SHTF we are all standing on the proper side of the fan.

Step 1: Get tons of batteries (all your electronic extras will need these things like mad), magazines (yes, really), cleaning tools (don't skimp), lube (apply generous amounts), ammunition (have no fewer than 300 rounds minimum), upper receiver convserions (22lr, 308 win), night sights (trouble happens in the dark), flare launcher (signal trouble), tac light (blinds things and lets you see what you are doing), reflex sight (does not need batteries), and a bayonet (for use as a tool which doubles as a zero ammo force applicator).

Step 2: Practice with the stuff, a lot.

Step 3: keep building you ammo, cleaner, lube, and mag stockpiles.

My personal version of this is:

Get a decent AK, bootlaces, motor oil, a bayonet, and stockpile mags and ammo.

I keep my ar clean with just a sling, vert grip, and sometimes a light. Also have a mag in the gun and 10 in a small bag near by all loaded.

A 308 upper conversion?

They make them, they just won't fit on an AR15 lower. :)

I'm right there with you on the idea of having a series of uppers for a single lower. I built up a really nice Mega Machine billet lower with Timney trigger and all manner of other goodies. I order several of their matching billet uppers. So far I've built one in 450 Bushmaster. I've got all the goodies to do another in 10mm. Then I need to do one in .223 Remington. And I've got a feeling the last upper will end up outfitted for 6.5 Grendel.

Fun, versatile stuff, the AR-15 design is!

Yeh, the SHTF there will be a vast surplus of 450 bush, 10mm, and 6.5 grendel to be had. :D

*ducks*

Well, I do want him to be able to move reasonably with what he has.

I just had a vision of a guy lugging a rifle and 5 uppers in various calibers, a big Santa sack of batteries, and 300 rounds of 5.56. :D

Just yankin' yer chain, guys. ;)

However the OP said "emergency" and not SHTF so I agree with those who have said get some ammo and practice, and/or take a carbine course.

No, in all fairness the OP said 'SHTF' but I edited it to a more discussable term.

SHTF scenarios are not considered appropriate topics for THR for several reasons, not the least of which is the lack of a standard definition that engenders some rather wild and imaginative fantasy scenarios. Rather than stifle the discussion by locking or removing the thread, I elected to edit the OP to try to capture the essence of the question without encouraging more fantastical or imaginative elements.

You haven't seen my ammo stash. :)

In an "emergency hits the fan" situation, I personally think a .22 conversion and a couple of bricks of ammo would be the most useful AR-15 accoutrement one could hope for.
