Hey folks I finished my 11.5" AR build and was going to go the obvious route of a aimpoint patrol optic. After thinking about it I would really like a combination of a 3x or 4x and a reflex sight. That way the 300 yard gong at the range doesn't stand a chance but the gun will still play a hd role with the burris fastfire 3. What is your opinion of either the mtac or the tac 30? I can get each complete with the fast fire for just about the same price as the aimpoint. Also what is your opinion of doing a similar setup combo with the burris 332 3x and a fastfire? Thanks for any info. Also I think I ruled out a magnifier since I don't want to blow up the size of my reticle.

tac30 alone works fine for me. Keep it 1x unless needing to shoot something further out. No need for an extra gagit IMHO.

As for home defense, the tac30 would not be my choice. The ill adjustment is a little funny and it's easy to set it to where it will washout the target in the dark.

I really like mine [TAC30]. 1x almost looks as clear as a reddot, but you have the ability to go 4x if needed. SOME people don't like the type of reticle in it. I'm okay with it. Great for close up stuff, may not be quite so good at a distance, but all in all, I am glad I have mine. I only wish I had found one in the earth color.

Burris gets to sell something else and it looks cool to some people. :)

FWIW, a buddy has mine on his rifle (permanent loaner...I think) and he can ring an 8" plate at ~300 yds all day with 55gr ball ammo.

I run an MTAC on my PTR91. I like it a lot. Using the 4x I can range and shoot out to 500yds pretty consistently. If I need to come closer then about 100yds I can dial it back to 1X and it works very well.

It is however, primarily a magnified optic that can be dialed down. Even at 1X, you're looking through a tube and it's slower than an Aimpoint or Eotech. Good but not great. Which works fine for me on a .308. On a short AR? that I want to use in the HD role? Not so much.

I run a simple red dot on my 10.5" HD AR. Fast, light, simple. I agree with you about the FTS magnifier and bigger dot.

You need to decide on which is the Primary role for your carbine. HD inside of 50yds? Get a RDS and magnifier and deal with the sub-optimal magnification. 300yd shots? Get the MTAC and deal with sub-optimal CQB.

Either path will work very well, they will just have different strengths.

ETA: I used the fastfire in the kit on a different gun completely. The MTAC at 1X is certainly good enough not to hang another piece of equipment on the rifle and deal with switching head positions.

Next-cube neighbor here at work has the MTAC on his S&W AR, he has had nothing but good things to say about it.

He's out getting parts replaced (new hip) so I can't ask him to post his complete experiences with the MTAC right now.

Some guys will do anything for a few weeks off. :)

Burris MTAC owner here and very satisfied.
I appreciate that it will work without batteries (unless dark of course) and that just using level-1 illumination will give a dark ring in sunlit areas and a readable ring in shade/darkness.

I even sent someone 'downrange' (with the AR bolt in his hand, the untrusting cuss) to see exactly how the ring worked at various ranges so I'd have a mental picture.

The only changes I've made are
Butler Creek scope covers, (02A and 16 I believe)

A Universal-sized Breakaway Coaster while I decide if I really want/need a dedicated cattail -

Not my rifle, I have a potato for a camera.

And lastly a spare 2032 battery holder

The reticule is a bit busy/thick and I'd probably like an AUG-style 'donut of death' but I'll happily put up with what I have.
