I was walking in the woods down a hill. I was stepping down one of those speed bumps on the trail to redirect water so it doesn't carve a gully on the trail. The earth gave way and my foot rolled under....

At the time, I couldn't get anyone else at the camp on the phone, so I fired three shots with my pistol. I tried on my phone again and got one of the guys who got me some help. I was on my back a couple of hours.

The guys got a four wheeler down to me, and held it so I could pull myself up. I got my hurt leg in a semi-comfortable position (as good as it was going to get) and cranked it up. Since I had to go over two of those speed bumps on a hill, we tied a rope to the front to ensure the front wouldn't come up since I couldn't really lean forward with my bad leg. Got over the bumps and slowly made my way back to camp.... I felt every bump.

Once we got to camp, we decided which city to go to get to the ER. Ended up going to University in Jackson, MS. I was there three hours waiting when we were told that there would be another 8 hour wait.... It was around 9PM and an older fella who was there since 2PM just got seen. There was a guy in the waiting room who had a gunshot wound. He was just sitting there waiting and bleeding.

Once we found out there would be another 8 hours, we elected to go to another hospital. They got me in and out in a little over an hour. I ended up breaking my tibia and fibula. Got a splint, some pain meds, went to mom's house. That was Dec. 29, 2011.... Surgery to fix everything (plates and screws) is scheduled for Wednesday.

I guess it will be funnier next year.

Oh, I forgot to add. Those three shots that it seemed nobody heard? Well several people just thought someone was blasting away at a deer.

In short, be careful out there.

That old fire three shots thing is useless these days -- unless you live in the city, then the police will be by in ten minutes.

Maybe you should agree to fire five shots to the tune of "shave an a haircut" and if they hear you they'll respond with "two bits".

They might be in a place where they can't fire off a response of two bits.

Glad everything worked out. What makes me mad about this story is it outlines the absolutely abysmal state of emergency care in this country

You can get shot in the God knows where hills of Afghanistan and see real medical attention in less time than if you break a bone within walking distance of the hospital

Three rapid shots, three spaced out, three rapid. Morse code for S.O.S.

BAM-BAM-BAM,

BAM,

BAM,

BAM,

BAM-BAM-BAM

.... and then all you need is a battle pack of ammo and someone who knows Morse Code!

/Seriously, 8 hour ER wait? That is appalling. ...and should never happen in developed nations.

Good lessons learned are sometimes painful lessons. The deeper I go into the woods, the more prepared I make myself, because I am usually going in alone. I'm glad you made it out eventually, and that you got proper treatment. Better luck next year, and my prayers are with you in your healing.

Glad you are on the mend. Think positive, deer season 2012 will be here in a flash and you will be ready for it.

Uh, this happened in MS.

;)

Glad you're ok.

Glad you made it out alright in the end!

I feel your pain with the ER wait. I at one time ended up strapped to one of those backboards and in a neck brace for about 5hrs. That was just awful.

Glad you made it out.

I am not surprised firing 3 shots didn't work. Everywhere I hunt that is around people, I never hear just one shot being fired, it is normally everyone emptying their gun until the deer runs away.
Better luck next year.

Thanks folks.

Yeah, the ER was in MS. I'm sure there are overcrowded hospitals in every city though with unfortunately similar wait times.... I had a similar experience in Murfreesboro, TN when I got kidney stones (I had no idea what was going on at the time) after I just moved there that weekend... it was a Sunday.

There is something wrong with it.
