First, let me say what an abomination that AK brake is. That is the loudest thing I have ever shot that had a brake or compensator. My ears were ringing for days(I normally wear muffs but wanted to here the plates ding so I slid my left muff off)....

I took the three set screws out, but the thing wont budge and appears to be attached to the front site, even though by the looks of it I thought it wasnt. Does anyone have any tips?

I was thinking that too, but it has three set screws. I guess in other countries without the minimum length law maybe its removealbe and here they weld it on after import......that would stink, I really hate how loud it is.

Thats odd, I don't find mine to be too loud. I always wear good muffs though. An AR with a mini-Y is much louder.

I don't think you can remove it easily... it has to be welded on as far as I know. Thats the law these days.:banghead:

It's the law?

Yeah, I have long wondered about that. The law about barrel length dates from 1934, doesn't it. Yet we used to be able to buy AK's with no flash hider (oopsss, bad word)I mean muzzle brake. In fact, I see used ones that don't have that feature, and yet we have to now buy new ones that do? What is the real law here, assuming the 16 inch length is already met, which the original AK design does?

The law is that no matter what the length of the barrel (overall length has to be 16" including muzzle devices), the barrel can not be threaded. Which means that on post ban guns, muzzle devices have to be welded or pinned on so that they can't be easily switched out. A gun smith can remove it, as long as the OAL is still at least 16" without the device. Post ban muzzle devices are limited to 'permanently' attached breaks and comps; no flash hiders allowed, pinned, welded, or otherwise.

The VEPR K has a 16.5" barrel w/o the brake, so a gun smith would legally be able to remove the brake. Unfortunately, simply undoing the three screws in the brake will not allow for removing it.

Somewhat true. It is my understanding that you CAN permanently install a thread adapter to 22mm and have a removable brake as there are no suppressors currently made to fit 22mm. There is more info as well as a letter about it from BATF tacked in the Romanian forum on ak-47.net
