I am planning on replacing the stock on my AK and notice that many of the replacement stocks are either for a milled or a stamped receiver. How do I tell the difference ? My AK is a Norinco MAK 90 that I have had since the early 90's. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

well stamped receivers are made out of thin metal and the front barrel trunnion and rear stock tang will be riveted onto the receiver so the round rivet heads is the easieast way to tell a stamped.
milled is where the whole receiver is machined out and there will not be any rivets as the trunions will be part of the receiver.
think some of the maks also had the reciever cut at an angle so a stndard stock set may not quite look right if fitted but there is places like iron wood designs that make stocks for the angle cut mak receivers.

The easiest way to tell at a very casual glance is that a stamped AK (which is most of them) will have rivets showing on the sides of the receiver, at the front and rear and a milled receiver won't. Also, a milled receiver has a lightening cut above the magazine well.

Here's a picture that shows a milled receiver on top and a stamped one below it: http://ak47websites.com/images/system/norm.php?1CA50-00-10-26-06-025.jpg

It's stamped, but is it thicker than other stamped receivers ?

OK, thanks for the info. It's stamped, but is it thicker than other stamped receivers ? I did some searching on this forum and some of the post talked about the Norinco MAK 90's having a 1.6mm wall thickness, which is thicker than the other AK receivers. Does anyone have any recommendations as to who makes a quality replacement stock set for this AK. Btw, it is not an angled receiver, but a straight cut where the stock would attach to the receiver. Thanks again for all the good information and opinions. :)

Ironwood Designs make popular AK stock sets. Here's a blonde; some fitting required.

the chinese receiver is slightly thicker .1 mm than most other ak receivers but that really isnt a problem for a stock you may have to do a little fitting removing some material for the stock to fit your receiver.
as per stocks just depends what you like wood or synthetic lots of options
kvar and tapco is probably most common for synthetic.

also should read up on compliance parts for 922r I believe, wich requires you to change out some other parts to usa made ones when changing the existing thumbhole stock fire control group is commonly changed.

MAK90 is already 922r compliant.

My MAK90 has already been made 922r compliant years ago. It no longer has the original thumbhole stock on it, but the one on it has too much lateral play. I am looking to upgrade to something that will be solid and can hold up to normal wear and tear. Any ideas as to who makes the best (most solid) synthetic stock.

If you've got any interest in a Saiga sporter stock, I can make you a really good deal (cover shipping charges) on the one I just took off mine.

The Kvar US made plastic stocks are very well made and I've never had any problems with them.

You're going to have some fitting to do as they are designed for the WP standard 1mm thick receivers.

Learned something else today.. Kool!

I would have been looking for die marks, or what to me is obvious sheet metal, vs, tool marks... never would have thought about rivets.. can see them from a ways off...

Yep. Rivets and lightening cut. The cut can be seen very clearly a ways off.

The author C.J. Chivers who wrote The Gun about the Kalashnikovs did a recent interview on NPR all about the AK-47 that was the best piece I think I've ever heard on that station. When he started describing to the host about how to look for the lightening cuts above the magazine to identify a milled receiver, I thought I'd about faint!

Host: "When you say you find them ... how do you notice them?"
Chivers: "Well, you're going to laugh at me, so go ahead. If you know what you're looking for in the various Kalashnikovs, you become almost like a birdwatcher who can at a glance into the bushes tell you that there's three or four different kinds of warblers there..."

Pretty awesome. :)

The Gun is a great book and I highly recommend it. My local library has a copy that I read first and I liked it so much I bought my own copy too.

Chiver's website is also pretty darn good: http://cjchivers.com/ Lots of material there that he runs across doing his job as a reporter.
