How to wear a leather shoulder holster

I recently recieved a Galco shoulder holster, now I just need to know how its supposed to fit me. I tried it on and when I ajust the straps there is quite a bit excess strap, so Im thinking it must be too tight, also the leather is very soft. I am afraid of stretching/ruining it.

Basically how do you wear a leather shoulder holster? What parts should be tight and what parts should be loose? If it were nylon I would just wear it as tight as was comfortable but Id rather not destroy the straps on my new expensive(for me) shoulder rig. Any insight into shoulder holster wearing would be appreciated.


PS- Its not for CCW, its for my 6" Ruger SS Security Six with gigantic Badger grips on it. I dont know why I have it but I do and I want it to fit, heck next time theres a Katrinia I might need it.

It should be tight enough to hold your weapon securely while bending over, but loose enough to allow twisting and bending without binding up or pulling to tight on the shoulder area. It took awhile (and lots of small incremental adjustments) to get mine to fit comfortably. Even then it took several weeks before it felt good. The strain it puts on the tops of your shoulders from the weight of the gun takes some getting use to for us guys. I have heard that women have an easier time adapting to shoulder rigs as they are use to the shoulder strain from wearing a bra. Hope this helps.

The choice of any type of holster depends on your size and shape .Some holsters are not suitable for certain type people , for example short arms and barrel chest make a shoulder holster difficult !! I've used a sholder holster for my 1911 and M29 and it distributes the weight over both shoulders. But again it must fit and be adjusted properly for you.

If it is by chance a Galco Miami Classic, then it nis built to be usable by a variety of people... you need to get it to hang right, where the gun fits nicely tucked under your arm, and is easy to access... then use some tape to tape the ends of loose leather out of the way temporarily... (trust me on this)

then after you have worn it a while, (making minute adjustments on position and cant of the gun) and you have it right, tril the excess leather off with quality heavy duty shears, and leave a coupkle inches of "tab" to work with on the straps...

yes, it is soft supple leather, that is so it will lay flat and not make unsightly bumps and bulges, and so it will conform to your shape... but TRUST ME... that leather is tough... you won't break it easily...

I guess we need "training holsters."

A smart fella once told me that wearing a shoulder holster is like wearing a Stetson Hat. Sooner or later, your head will conform to the shape of the hat.

It took me three nights to get my Galco rig to fit properly. I got it positioned where I thought it should be, then wore it for a day, made adjustments that night, then the same thing the next day, etc.

Unless you use tie-downs, the gun and the mag pouch will always swing to the side a bit.
