Hey all, some around here may know i'm in the market for a 9mm, i've narrowed my choices to a p-99 (which i fired for the first time last weekend) and a springfield XD-9. I like em both, but the walther feels better... only thing is, it just looks too pretty i guess. I look at it and wonder if its a pistol to put on display, or a rugged, no nonsense machine that goes bang everytime like a glock, hk, sig....yadda yadda.... HELP!

they are pretty dang durable. The finish on them are really tough. You may get some markings on teh slide from ejected brass but those usualy wipe out with some gun oil. I have a sw99 and it still to this day looks brand new. ITs about 3 months old now, and gets taken to the range almost every week for usualy around 100 rounds. they are pretty but i wouldnt feel bad about carrying it every day because it is so durable and the fact id know it would go bang every time

Although extremely reliable and very durable, I do have a strange streaking effect on the left hand side of my all german p99. I do not believe its rust, as I would say that would be nearly impossible from the way I baby the gun. I tried scrubbing them off for nearly an hour and did not have any luck. The streaks are not spreading, but I just thought I would let you know.

Other than that, I have absolutely no complaints with the gun. It has been 100% reliable (even firing a round that spent over 3 days underwater).

what color are the streaks? do you keep your gun in a leather holster or other similar products? cause it could just be from the leather. Darrin used to keep his p22 in leather till it came out one day white....something on the leather left white streaks

The P99 is Tuff Enuff. My black P99 has over 5,000 rnds thru it with no failures of any kind. It is starting to show some holster wear, but it is my daily carry gun. My QPQ P99 has over 500 rnds thru it with no failures as well. The P99 is an excellent pistol.

2200+ trouble free rounds have been through my P99 .40 . I haven't had a single malfunction that wasn't my fault (the slide failed to lock back a few times because my thumb was riding the slide release). I've fired the gun in very cold weather ( -30 deg F ) and in blowing sand storms. (the outdoor range I go to can be REALLY windy....and sandy) It has never failed to go bang when I asked it to.

The streaks are copper colored. The gun has never been in leather. I had a thread on this a while ago, and the general consensus was that it was copper residue of some kind. I hope that it is, but I cant get it off (scrubbed for about an hour with hoppes and clp).

You can feel confident to shoot +P all day long. They are great guns, you will not regret your choice one bit.

good luck and enjoy that mechanical work of art :D :D

A friend of mine had a 9mm P99, and found it started malfunctioning after several hundred rounds between cleanings. Clean it, and it works again . . . for a couple of hundred rounds. (He shoots name-brand factory ammo in 9mm.)

Walther's rep told him they need different recoil springs, depending on the load; one for regular, one for European or +P.

For whatelver reason, P99s seem to have largely disappeared from the local IDPA circuit.

1500+ trouble free 9 mm rounds shot here. The only wear I can see is the outside finish of the barrel and the slide where it contacts the barrel. Maybe I need to use more CLP ? I lube and then remove most of it.

i have shot a few thousand rounds thru mine, and not a single problem, I have an euro version from Earls and i love it.......i used to have the Carlwather usa marked one........but i use my euro one now

SLH02.... i had something similar happen to my carry piece... appears it comes from those little brass/copper buttons on the levi jeans at the pockets... go figure :D
