I have run across a Walther P-99 AS .40 cal. It is in 'as new' condition. I have several other pistols such as Glock 17, Browning Hi-Power, Sig P-239 and P-232 and several 1911s. I really don't need it but it seems like a pretty good buy(estate sale - $250.00.) Is it considered a good/ quality handgun and what is it worth? Thanks for any information you may have.

I'd be all over it for that price! It is, indeed, a good/excellent quality gun that is rightly considered the flagship of the Walther line. Read up on the unique "AS" trigger which has charmed many a shooter. Heck, if you don't like it you could easily move it for probably more than you are about to pay for it. Better yet, PM me and I'll take it off your hands! :)

Designed as 9mm. Lightweight at about 24 ounces, hence you will know it's a "snappy" .40.
AS (anti stress) is a great trigger system DA/SA. I think the ergonomics on these are outstanding albeit a personal thing. Good price though. You can use certain S&W mags.

Thats a great deal for a great gun. Get it! I love my 9mm AS P99. Only thing I wish were different is the rail on my first gen.....

Definitely jump on it if it is a Generation 2 or later. You can tell it is Gen 2 because it has a notch in the rail, like in post #6. I paid much more than $250 for mine 5 years ago. The P99 was the only firearm I have ever owned that I instantly fell in love with. Other firearms I had to learn to get used to. Now I just need to get one in 9mm.

Actually, unlike Glock pistols, the P99 was designed with .40SW in mind from the onset (though the .40SW pistols reached the market a year or two later than the 9mm version).

The .40SW P99 has a slide with higher mass to accommodate recoil from the cartridge and a more fully-supported chamber than the Glock pistols.

That said, while the 9mm P99 shoots like a dream, the .40SW P99 can be a bit snappy, as it is one of the lightest of all full-size pistol designs. That said, $250 is a heck of a deal, and you should jump on it. The P99AS is one of the finest polymer pistol designs out there, and the AS trigger has the best striker-fired trigger feel of any design out there, bar none.
