How usable is a Scope on an A2 config AR?

I want to know how usable a scope is that could be mounted on the carry handle of an A2 configuration A2. I do not want an A3 as I normally use the iron sights and like the ability to do long shooting that the detachable carry handle does not adjust all the way up for.

I was thinking that it would be nice to use one of the "old style" scopes that mount on the carry handle for an occasional hunting situation.

The gist of my question is, does the tall scope mounting position make it difficult to use?

Opinions vary, of course, but most people think that a carry handle mounted scope sits too high for a good cheek weld. IMHO, I agree with that assessment.

I had one a couple of years back mounted on a Bushy A2. Thing sat too high to comfortably shoot and still make cheek contact with the stock. They do however offer a cheek rest like the Delta type that allow for a more comfortable hold.

Still, the rifle felt unbalanced to me and felt prone to canting.

I purposely bought my AR-15 (a Bushmaster 16" barrel shorty carbine) in the permanent A2 configuration and have no ambitions to put any optics on it for some of the reasons already stated.

You can also mount a rail on the handle that will allow a long eye relief scope, red dot, or holographic sight but that is not why I chose my configuration and I don't want to clutter up my basic A2 (which I chose to improve on the reasons to have a Mini-14).

Besides, I really like the AR-15 peep sight which is perfectly combat adequate to 300 yards. For close work within 100 yards the larger rear appeture is great. In fact, it could be improved by being even more open (Ashley makes such a device).

If I were to scope my AR-15, I would plan on getting a new flat top upper with a 24" barrel for tack driving.

My latest AR (only current one) came with a scope, then I put another scope on it... then finally decided that I could do well enough with the iron sights and finally just took the scope off. I wouldn't mind having a heavy barrel varmint-type flat top, but I don't have a whole lot of interest in using the handle-mounted scopes anymore.
