How would you spend $500 on a handgun

Another vote for CZ. The PO-1 and D PCR are fantastic carry pieces. All of the 75 series are great guns. They are every bit as good (if not better) as Sig 2/3 the price.

Send my S&W 625 to Hamilton Bowen for a
trigger/action job, shorten the barrel to 4" & fixed
sights sighted in for 25 yards.

I'd spend it on my gun...

Used? Find a pinned blued S&W - best one
for the amount

Used Smith and Wesson 66 3" (or any 3" K frame Smith)
Just a really fun gun to shoot.
And I'd spend the leftover $200 on a set of hogue grips and a bunch of ammo

I'd also go for a used S&W of whatever flavor. But if you manage to find any 3" S&Ws for $300, buy two! I haven't seen a 3" 66 for less than $500 for over 2 years.

My .02...

CZ of your choice
P226 CPO (Just bought what appears to be a brand new one for $449)
RIA 1911 5" Tactical..I've heard great things about this gun and .45's are FUN!!!!

I saw a S&W Model 64 for $269. Guess I will go have another look....
I would look for a P226, but CPO is going for close to $600.

Sig P229 or P226 CPO, very good price on a normally much more expensive firearm.

#1 It is extremely reliable (4000 rounds through mine without a failure, even with a bent recoil spring).

#2 It is accurate and comfortable to shoot, with Hogue rubber grips it feels very nice.

#3 It is easy to care for, unlike XDs the Sig does not require a trigger pull to field strip

#4 Readily available parts, lots and lots of options.

#5 With the CPO price point ($450-$550) you get a the Sig for the same price as an XD or Glock.

Bdg146 and I have similar tastes in Rugers -- I was about to recommend a GP-100 with a 6in bbl. Alternative in my book is if you can find another Dan Wesson 357 where the barrell is screwed into the frame, covered by a shroud, then fastened at the end of the shroud. The idea was that putting the barrell under tension at the front and rear would improve accuracy. I loved mine -- wish I had kept it. Good luck!

i think a couple people didn't read where the OP said no .22s and no 1911s.

that said...for $500 i agree with getting the highest quality used S&W revolver you can find. i like the blued ones, but whatever floats your boat. N frames will be over $500 if they're in decent shape, so stick to the K. they will never lose value and will only get harder to find.

you should also be able to find a nice used colt detective special for that price limit. would make a nice and classic carry piece.

How would I spend $500 on a handgun? Quickly....very quickly.:D:neener:

I just picked up:

Keltec P-32 - $249
Colt Detective Special - $318.50
CZ 75 B - $425

And, I am getting ready to pick up a Keltec P-11 for $259. With that being said, I think the CZs are a great value.

Now to save some money for that Bike Friday folding bicycle.

I'm an old marine, and I've shot quite a few pistols over the years. All my wheel guns are gone, and most of my autos are from CZ. I've got several CZ 75Bs, a CZ 40B and a CZ 97B is on the way. Reliable, accurate, fantastic ergonomics for most people, and still reasonably priced.

I've done that more than a couple times in the last six months.

The best examples: Used S&W 442 (virtually unshot, carry wear) - $330.00

And just this past week--a new EAA Witness Elite Series Match 10 mm - $480.00. This one is far and away the best-value purchase I have made.

Hmm...you ruled out two of the guns that I would spend $500 on. I am thinking of getting a Glock 26 or a Ruger Mark III in the near future.

I would probably get a 6" GP-100 then.
