How would you spend $500 on a handgun

I cast my vote along with Shawnee. I have been so focused on go faster guns, the thought of a fun little single action has got me drooling for a Vaquero with a birds head grip.

There are far too many choices to pick from for 500 clams. Myriad of S&W autos and revos, Rugers in auto, single or double action, many of the Euro guns. Holy cow, way too many to list here. I say find a well stocked shop in your area and go check them out. MY only recomedation will be caliber. If you are stressed on 500 for the gun you probably are limmited on ammo funds as well. Think cheap and common, 9mm or .38 spec.

Since $500 won't buy me another Colt, I would look for a blue Ruger Security Six with 4" barrel. Practically indestructible. Would have $$$ left over for ammo.

I would never rule out a glock. Yes they are ugly, but so very durable, reliable, and accurate. I would also have to strongly encourage a J,K, or N frame S&W. They are beautifully made and there are plenty of nice used ones out there.

Someone on one of these forums once wrote..." I will show my friends my S&W's, but I will show my enemies my Glocks!"

$500 gets you a lot of handgun in the used market. I saw a used HK USP 45 for around that. Used SIG P225's are available. An odd gun might be a Beretta Cheetah in 380 or one of the many S&W semi-autos.

I'd agree with many of the others so far, and spend that $500 on a Cz or Tanfoglio; the Cz could be a new Cz-75, or (barring a great sale), a used P-01 or SP-01. or (oh boy, it gets tough to pare down, doesn't it?) a Cz-97. Or a RAMI, for that matter. If you get the Cz-75 used, you might have a fair amount left over, with which to ... customize your 75, or put into pork belly futures, or use to start the fund for the *next* gun on your list ...

Not that there aren't lots of other good guns out there :) Another one to consider (and one of my favorites, so take your grain of salt as needed) is a S&W 625 -- shoots beautifully, great trigger, ammo (.45ACP) pretty reasonable. And moonclips rock!

$359 on a P6/P225 from Dan's Ammo, $150 on 9mm ball from ammoman, raid the piggy bank for the missing $9 and FFL costs, and never have to leave the comfort of your desk chair.

$500 is a pretty arbitrary and tight limit, if we're thinking ammo and whatever else we need.

I keep seeing new $499 Beretta M92FSes. That's the plain jane one, but for what I've heard, Beretta quality is second to none and I like how my full-metal airsoft equivalent feels in my hand. 9mm (9x19) and is used in variety of guns. Decent recoil and power, but cheaper than 45ACP.

S&W K most likely a Model 14 or 13 depending on if I wanted a 6" barrel for target or 3" barrel for carry. As stated already ..........money left over.

I'm with Seiko, I'd go for a SW K /L frame, 64,65, 66. And get ammo with the money left over. Shop wise.

My last handgun purchase was a stainless DAO 3" Ruger GP100. It was $500 if you count the first dozen boxes of ammo. If I had $500 to spend now on handguns I wouldn't buy one, I'd spend the money on ammo, range fees and training.

Bersa Thunder 9,.40 or.45.
Why? Because I have three Bersa made 9mms and all have been reliable and have nice triggers and are accurate. They also retail for $300 to $350.
I would use the extra $150 to $200 to buy ammo, a holster and extra mags.
My daily CCW is a Firestorm Mini 9 (made by Bersa).

Down payment on a USFA high end turnbull finished gun,

or a Dp on an older match target colt's woodsman, with a 4 inch barrel.

If only one gun, I'd want something that could be concealed, CZ P01. A buddy was being shipped to Australia and sold his for $250...I missed it.

CZ offers a lot of good guns. I'd get 9mm, cheapest to shoot.

Guns I have under $500.
Springfield 1911 - not your thing
Taurus M85 - snubby for cc
Taurus 66 - 4" 357
FN Hi-Power - not readily available - CDNN deal was awesome
CZ-82, 9mm MAK

interestingly enough, after selling my mod.686 s&w 357 mag to purchase a 45 acp and a walther p-22, i would relace the 686. if 500 clams wouldnt buy new, i would buy a used one. i think they are pretty indestuctable, being stainless. just something about that gun i really liked.
