Someone had shown a site that offered many different muzzleloading guns, among them a double barreled percussion Howdahlike pistol that was more reasonably priced ($400 something?) than the Pedersoli pistol. I cannot seem to figure out what this company's name is, and whether or not it is an Indian company, as they seem to have a very bad reputation. Can anyone help?

middlesexvillagetrading.com is the site you are looking for, But be aware that these are India made guns and are considered by many to be for display only.

That's the one!

I was afraid they were a cheap Indian produced gun. Notorious for detonating in your hands?

Maybe a bored smooth 28 ga Lyman's Great Plains pistol will have to do...

I've been told that Middlesex Arms guns have been shipped to Germany and the UK where they are proofed. Any German or English members here can confirm this?

BTW, don't overlook that the barrels may be lined.

That has not been my experience at all. I have one of their "Howdah" style pistols. It is fairly well finished. I have had it and used it for some years and still have all of my fingers.
Would I recommend buying one? Only if you like to tinker with cap locks.
The gun had, when I first got it, absolutely the worst triggers that I have ever tried to use. They took two fingers to pull.....had to be in the 30-40 lb range.
I have worked on them and gotten them down to about half that.
About detonating.....do you have any documentation that Middlesex guns have exploded?
Pete

I don't, but I've certainly heard plenty of stories about Indian made rifles blowing up.

One was with a reinactor and there wasn't any sort of projectile.

Those triggers are way too heavy, and even at half of the pull it's still too much.

I've also considered just a Lyman's Plains pistol or a Traditions pistol and buying an extra barrel to have reamed smooth.

Why not look for a Pedersoil Howdah? Or shop Track of the Wolf's used guns to see what turns up?

I'm a bit leery of buying used, especially BP guns that cannot be looked over first.

Those Pedersoli Howdah's cost quite a bit to me. My "allowance" is rather meager and it's mostly split between shooting and brewing beer.

They have pretty good sales on the Pedersolis sometimes. It's $600 right now at Cabelas and at Middlesex I see it's $475. I'd pay the extra $125 in this case, and if you can't afford it I'd say wait. They go on sale all the time.
