Hurrah!

I just got back from picking up a brand new Ruger 10/22 that I've wanted for a while. I drove 45 minutes to go to a great little store, Shooter's Sports, in Valatie, NY instead of going 10 minutes to the Gander Mountain, and I am so glad! Both the old fellow and the 9 year-old working there were great, he gave me some freebies, and I've got a nice little gun. I'll go shoot some this evening.

Hope the weather's as nice where you are as it is here!

It sounds like the buying experience was as enjoyable as the the actual purchase. Even if it cost a bit more, that is worth it. Those kind of places are not as common anymore. Also, great choice for a 22. I have 3 now, and my first was back in 1970 or 71. Old 112

I know the place well ( and every other gun store within a few hours radius :) ) And I assume from the distance you must be talking about the Kingston Gander Mtn. I'm certainly on a first name basis with everybody there.. They've even used keys of of MY ring rather than opening the box when showing a customer the lock feature on handguns... I think I might be there too often. I was just thinking about picking up a a 10/22 myself this past week, but for some reason when I went to gander to get it I came home with a heavy barreled Savage MARK II in .22 instead. This one here.
http://savagearms.com/markiifvxp.htm I guess maybe I wanted to play with that accutrigger once I saw one on a .22.

Welcome to THR. Congrats on the 10/22 they're a lot of fun Sounds like you're local, where do you shoot ?

Hexidismal,

I'm about to graduate from Bard, and am moving to Portland, but for the next month I'm around.

Occasionally, I shoot with friends who have a membership at Neighbor's Gun Club in Rhinebeck. More often, though, I go to a friend's place out in Elizaville. He's got ~25 acres, and some nice banks to shoot into. And a lot of guns to try out!

Congrats fellow 10/22 owner! I personally have the carbine model with the 16 1/8" barrel. Light, fun gun to shoot. I got mine already fitted with a Bushnell scope, too! Got to love that rotary magazine, I think it's quite a bit easier to load than the conventional kind. Oh, word to the wise, stay away from the after-market extended magazines for the 10/22. I got some 30-rounders for mine, and they're total junk. I couldn't get more than 15 rounds in them and they turned my rifle into a jam-o-matic. Just buy more factory magazines from Ruger...they're expensive, but they work.

Yep, I got the carbine model as well.

As far as aftermarket magazines go, I've been cruising around rimfirecentral.com to see what folks have to say. It seems like the only extended mags that are good at the Tactical Innovations ones. I ordered one for $35 immediately upon getting home with my gun, but then had to cancel my order when I remembered they can't ship to NY:banghead: . (But I sent them a nice note and said I look forward to doing business with them in a month or so when I move to Oregon!)

The ten-rounders are nice, but if you're going to be out all afternoon it's nice to have a couple 25-30 rounders on hand. Makes the afternoon a lot less onerous in terms of constantly reloading.

I've never seen one of these in person, but isn't there some kind of speedloader device for the 10/22 that makes reloading much faster?

I've got a couple of Butler Creek hot lips 25 round mags for my 10/22 along with a speedloader and I haven't run into any problems during the 10 million rounds that have gone through the rifle.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever changed anything out on that rifle.

I love mine.

I have a trick one and love it. I just have to stay out of gunshops because I saw one that had about 2K into it selling for $500.00.
