How's this for a hunting load

Puma '92 in 45LC. New Starline brass, Win large pistol primers, 300 grain Hornady XTP (.452), 17.6 grains of Alliant 2400. COL 1.6535.
Plan on using this on Whitetail and Russian Wild Boar.
Think it will get the job done?

That should be a good thumper. Big hole in, bigger hole out. Another load with more thump is the 300 gr XTP with a LPM primer, WW cases and around 23 gr of H110( this shows up in print in more than 1 location, Hodgdon manual is 22.2 for handgun w/ 30ooo psi) Shoots safley in our 2 Pumas and chronos >1700fps, with excellent accuracy. The Puma was made and still is in 454 Casul-rated at 60ooo psi. If you try this load drop to 22 gr and work upward, using good judgement. Either way the whitetails and boars are in a heap of trouble.:D GOOD HUNTING!
 
The deer I shot last year was a 300gr .452" XTP/Mag at 1620fps MV from a 9.5" SRH .454 Casull. I don't remember the charge off hand, but it was the Hornady start load with 2400.

.45" hole in one side, nickel sized hole on the other. Destroyed the right lung and turned the liver inside out. Range was ~40 yards.

The .454 is overkill for whitetail, but my range an easy 125yds before gravity gets ahold of it.

The 300gr XTP will do just fine.

I can't comment on its safety/pressure, since I don't have any heavy .45 Colt +P load data in front of me.
 
Your OAL seems very long & Hornady's manual doesn't list a 300 gr bullet for a rifle load.
Are you seating to the cannelure?
They do list the 300 gr for Ruger & T/C only. (revolvers)

Is that for an HP-XTP or for the XTP-Mag?
The Ruger-T/C 300 gr XTP-Mag OAL is 1.655.
The Ruger-T/C 300 gr XTP-HP OAL is only 1.580.

The powder listing for 2400 is 16.5 - 18 gr

I agree a COL of 1.6535" seems too long.

SAAMI max length for the .45 Colt is 1.600", and a lever-action very likely will not feed something longer then that.

I believe that is why they don't list the 300 XTP-MAG bullet in the rifle section.

The standard 300 XTP would work at 1.580", but they don't list it either?

SS, its claimed that 296 & H110 are the same? I dont know. The data from lowend is from Hodgdon data mamnual- Start @ 21.8gr. but they level off at 22.2gr max. There is ample data for the 45LC and 300gr going well up from there. My comfort level is 23.0gr.
 
The XTP -Mag has only 1 Cannelure, according to the Hornady manual I have in front of me. The replys above made me go back and recheck everything and boy am I glad I did. Hornady Manual 7th edition has the wrong Picture shown for the XTP and the XTP-Mag. They have them switched. I am going back and reducing the COL to make them right.

If you have a single cannelure, forget the COAL, just seat it to the groove and crimp. It should feed them fine. Do they not feed correctly?

You can run up to 19.0gr 2400 and still be within "Ruger only" levels. Although the 1892 is significantly stronger.
 
With the bullets crimped in the cannelure, they feed just perfectly. I've already shot about 100 rounds of this setup and haven't had any issues.
