I use my sks for plinking, and it is time to stock up on ammo? Do you like the FMJ's or HP's. What are the pro's and cons of both for plinking. The price seems to be the same on both. Thanks in advance!

You can use the HP ammo for hunting in more places than you could use FMJ.

FMJ penetrates better than HP for Judgement Day. :p

If the ammo is otherwise identical, there's not much difference.

For any practical purpose (as opposed to target shooting) consider the 154 gr soft point. That's a knock-down round for hunting. For plinking, the FMJ and HP seem to have the same accuracy. I would get some of each and see which shoots better for you.

For target shooting with the SKS, I find that Sellier & Bellot and Winchester are more accurate and reliable than Wolf. Wolf blows back primers, which locks up the trigger and renders the gun unusable.

I've never had a primer pop on Wolf, and I've shot 6K+ of the stuff.

Make sure HP's feed before you drop the cash on them. My WASR won't feed Wolf HP, but my SKS does.

There are several ranges that I know of that will not let you shoot FMJ rifle ammo but that are OK with Wolf HPs.

I've ran 600+ rounds of Barnaul HP's through my Yugo SKS without a hitch. There really is no difference between the Hp and FMJ. The Hp's dont really expand anyway, they just deform more than FMJ.

they all work great in my sks, hp, sp, and fmj, the wolf 154gr sp's are the most accurate followed by the 122gr fmj by the same company and then the hp's. i have never had any issue with any kind of ammo, ie feeding problems etc. i just get what ever is cheapest, for plinking and about once a year get 500rds or so of the 154gr sp's, for in case of the zombies invade.

I run wolf's ammo without any FTF in a 75rd. drum, shooting as fast as my trigger finger. I think its great ammo!!! Getting very expencive now-use to pay $80 for a case-Shipped!!!!!now its $200. Oh yeah i ran 2 75 rd drums back to back and the forend caught on fire!!!! LOL Cheap old shooter special AK-47 $139 Romanian.....But my Yugo....That is a awesome weapon...never caught fire/ yet

that can't be good or safe, did rds start going off prematurly? cooking off as we call it.

Just plunked down for 1k rounds of Wolf "military classic" 124 grain and damned if I didn't just look back and realize it's HP. Oh well, it's all for plinking and my SKS doesn't seem to care what I put in it so I guess it'll be okay.

Best all around for plinking (and IMO SHTF) is FMJBT. Of the bunch it has the best penetration and should feed the best.
The 123gr HP is no good for hunting and does not mushroom-it really does nothing well.
The 150 gr would be suitable for hunting but has an even lower MV.
