For general plinking in an SKS and Saiga, which should I buy? Wolf SP is only $10 more per case, so might I just as well get that?

This would be my second bulk ammo purchase, the first 2 were 1k of wolf HP and 1k of Wolf FMJ and I could hardly tell the difference. My shooting is done at 100 yards or less, and I guess my Saiga is the only HD-eligible gun I have

Thanks

The Wolf SP is a heavier grained bullet, I think 154 grs, versus 123 for FMJ and HP. That might make a difference. Your gun may not like shooting that larger grained bullet at all, and accuracy may suffer. Or, it may love it. I think I'd try to shot a box or two of it first before making a bulk purchase. The last thing you want to do is buy a case of rds to find out your gun hates it. :banghead:

I bought 1,000rds of Silver Bear FMJ at the last gunshow, and 200rds of the Wolf SP just because it was there. My Yugo loves the Silver Bear. Haven't tried out the Wolf SP yet, but if it likes it, then I may get some more.

For plinking get the cheapest one. The JHPs and the FMJs are usually the same price though. The JHPs generally don't expand. The jacket is likely too stiff and the hole is definately too small. But some people report that the JHPs tumble something fierce. The JHPs might be more accurate. Sort of like the idea behind the MatchKing. Or maybe not. My advice: flip a coin. :D

Now if you are talking HD(without getting into the can of worms that is "overpenetration") get the SPs. But the extra ten bucks wouldn't be worth it for plinking ammo, unless it's more accurate.
