HP38 load for 44 Magnum lever action?

I would like to roll some .44 Special level loads in Magnum cases that will work in both my Redhawk and Marlin 1894.

If I use Magnum load data with HP38 from the Lee manual for 185 gr. Cast bullets, will they be OK from the rifle too? Or would I need to worry about bullets getting lodged in the barrel?

The reason I wonder is that HP38 is not listed in the rifle load data in my Lyman book, and neither are bullets weighing less than 200 gr.

Hodgdon online load data lists HP-38 and 185 grain cast data.

Bet you'll get a soft shooter out of it.

I think the Lee book got that data from Hodgdon. I have a Lee/Hodgdon book that has that data under Cowboy Action loads for pistol and carbine.

I guess it is OK then, and I just shouldn't go lighter.

The Hodgdon load data site has load data for the .44 Magnum using a 185gr bullet and the data is the same under the handgun and rifle section. Hodgdon doesn't change the data in the rifle and handgun section, they just report the velocities you might get from each.

They are claiming 1035 fps from the starting charge weight with a 185gr LRNFP bullet from a Carbine. The same load in a handgun is listed at 906 fps. Here is the link for the Hodgdon Load Data Site. (like posted above)

When I first started loading for my carbines, a more experienced reloader than I, told me to never go below 1000 fps to avoid a stuck bullet. He told me anything that did over 900 fps in my revolvers would be fine. ArchAngel information mirrors my mentors words.

If I may, I would think you would need a really soft load to stick a bullet in the tube as a squib will get you several inches into the bbl. Just adding a bit of powder should at least clear your round.

I load both .357 and 44 mag for handgun and rifle (Marlins) and even using really soft loads (CAS) as well as some with black powder have never come close to a stuck round.

Worse case is really not that bad using lead, I would work down a load untill you were happy, bet you will be happy long before you stick a bullet.
