Not sure what to make of this move by NOAA. The article doesn't say, but I assume the ammo is for security personnel in/around the nation's weather stations?

National Weather Service Follows DHS In Huge Ammo Purchase

Hollow point bullets designed to cause maximum organ damage

The federal government is clearly gearing up for the likelihood of civil unrest on a scale that could outstrip what we’ve already seen in countries across Europe.

While the establishment demonizes the second amendment in light of recent mass shootings and legislation is prepared to ban the sale of large quantities of ammunition online, the federal government is acquiring ammunition at levels necessary to fight a full scale domestic war.

Not to steal your thunder here. I got an email telling of the Govt. buying $millions worth of MRE's, $450 million worth of .40 cal. HP ammo, and HLS ordering another 750 million rds of pistol and rifle ammo. The $450 million worth of .40 cal ammo was purchased from AlliantTechsystems. Not ordered for a Sat. aftn. fun shooting fest. I wish I knew how to upload the info I have.

It's just a thought, but NOAA has large ocean going ships. I would guess that with the increase seen in highjackers and piracy this year, they are arming those ships for defense as well.

Good for them I say.

Blame

Global warming!!!! If this is real and NOAA did buy the ammo it might just be for another govt agency who doesnt want its pruchases scrutinized by the press and mickey mouse websites like infoplanet etc.

Now if it was Fox News and Business they probably need the ammo for the body guards for their hot weather chick Maria Molina. Keep the rabble away.

I wouldn't put as much credence in emailed stories about what the government is/isn't doing.
If this is real...
The article in my Op is simply outlining this purchase req from fbo.gov: https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportu...&id=bfd95987a1ad9a6dfb22bca4a19150cb&_cview=0
The DOC NOAA National Weather Service - Western Acquisition Division ? Boulder requires the following items, Purchase Description Determined by Line Item, to the following:
LI 001, 16,000 rounds of ammunition for semiautomatic pistols to be factory-loaded .40 S&W caliber, 180-grain jacketed hollow point (JHP). No reloads may be used with these weapons. All service furnished ammunition for issued firearms will be U.S. factory production.
Inside Delivery to locations below:
NED:
8,000 rounds to...
Look real or fake?
Info wars is like getting your news from the enquirer.
Are you implying that the solicitation listed on fbo.gov is less than real? Or are you just making an off topic remark rooted in ideology?

If the later, please remove your remarks.

Yellow journalism at it's worst. The quanities listed are not that large considering most federal contracts are for delivery over a period of years.

It is strange that NWS would be doing any purchases of ammo, but maybe they have excess funds in their budget that have to be spent.

The NOAA, like many other federal agencies, has a LE department. Its not a conspiracy to take over the world.

It might not be to take over the world but if you take a look back 20 or 30 yrs at the LE capabilities of the alphabet soup agency's you wont see big budgets for tactical units that you see today.
Someone needs to explain why every one of them has its own well equipped police force.

is this like the other "zomg" ammo purchases? that turned out to be purchases planned incrementally between now and 2017?

Can we put a stop to Infowars "news" links?

Infowars has nothing to do with guns, the Second Amendment or ammunition and everything to do with conspiracy theories and nutjob fantasies.

If it weren't for Infowars, the National Enquirer wouldn't have anyone to look down on.

The messenger has taken enough shots that I've considered editing my OP to just have the fbo.gov link because it's obvious that people can't help themselves from talking about the source as opposed to the subject. If there is any other news outlet that has reported this, I'd even replace the infowars article with another one. But all that would end up putting a lot of post removal on the mods.

I'll let the mods do what they think is best.

Yeah, let's kill this as there is no possible way to get the (Dis-) InfoWars taint off of it.

Looks like a relatively minor aquisition for hollowpoint duty ammo, frangible training ammo, some targets and such. If folks are going to be carrying guns, I LIKE it when they get some practice... :)

A bit of extra info from ugaarguy:

The FBO solicitation shows all ammo going to various locations which are all "DOC, NOAA, NMFS, OLE,". That's these folks - http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/ole/about/headquarters.html.

I also found it interesting that the bulk of the ammo "24,000 rounds to: Jeff Radonski, A/DSAC DOC, NOAA, NMFS, OLE, SED". SED is their Southeast Division which:

"extends from North Carolina southward to Florida and around the Gulf of Mexico to the shores of Texas. The Division also encompasses the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Southeast Division has a broad range of enforcement responsibilities in recreational and commercial marine fisheries, from covering finfish such as snapper and grouper and including commercial catch share programs to Highly Migratory Species such as shark, tuna and swordfish. In addition, the Southeast Division monitors protected resources such as dolphins and marine turtles and three National Marine Sanctuaries."

I realize I'm preaching to the choir, but that's not much ammo for such responsibilities in a huge territory of jurisdiction.
