But authorities gave hunters the green light to kill the 100-kilogram (220.5 lb) beast after it went on a rampage, slaughtering dozens of sheep and chickens.
They should have captured it and given it to one of those bleeding heart animal rights activist to take care of.:barf:

BERLIN (Reuters) - A rampaging wild bear, the first seen in Bavaria in more than 170 years, has been shot dead by a hunter, a spokesman for the local authority in the region of Oberbayern said on Monday.

The young brown bear, known as "Bruno", drew widespread media coverage and was initially welcomed after it wandered across the border with Austria.

But authorities gave hunters the green light to kill the 100-kilogram (220.5 lb) beast after it went on a rampage, slaughtering dozens of sheep and chickens.

Authorities said the bear's hunt for food was taking it ever closer to inhabited areas and it was therefore a threat to the safety of residents.

Germany's animal protection agency in Bavaria called the decision to shoot the bear "hysterical", but a spokesman for the World Wildlife Fund said the beast could not be left out in the wild as it was too dangerous.

Gabriel Schwaderer, director of the European Nature Heritage Fund, said on Monday he regretted the shooting.

"We consider the decision by the Bavarian government to be wrong, because it was based only on the fact that the bear was getting close to human habitation," Schwaderer said.

"If this is to be the yardstick for the right to life of brown bears then the outlook is bleak for European bears."

The report should have said the first bear seen in Bavaria in 170 years. The Bavarian government should have issued its citizens .44 Magnum revolvers to defend themselves at need and let the bear roam:D

in any way Legal or Political?

The bear was an illegal alien who crossed the border from Austria into Germany without papers.

Should he have been shot for this?

What are the legal and political ramifications for this, given the current US hot political topic of illegal immigration, and the failed European Union Constitution?

I completely understand killing it (it was being a dangerous nuisance animal), and it is a shame. But, most of Germany and Western Europe is to densely populated to have large predators roaming loose. This is the result.

You've got it wrong . The bear is part of a program to increase the number of bears in Italy ! Two bears were imported from Slovenia. There offspring are called JJ1 and JJ2 .JJ1 [Bruno] went north into Austria and Germany. From the start he was referred to as "vicious" and "rampaging" etc .He did eventually kill some sheep that he didn't eat .Handled poorly from the start I guess he was doomed !

I think they made the right decision.

The last time an Austrian went to Germany and started a rampage, the next thing you know there was an invasion of Poland.

I wish they'd introduce an immigration policy like that over here.

If the bear had made it the way to the UK he would have been given income benefits, a house and had all his medical bills paid for. And if he'd killed a few people on the way, well.... it's in his nature.:banghead:

Quite right. You have to realize that Germany has more than 80,000,000 inhabitants crammed into an area the size of New Mexico.

I think they made the right decision.

That's the funniest thing I heard about this topic so far... :D :p
