I've always been a hunter. Like most, I punched lots of holes in paper and killed about a ton of tin cans before my dad let me hunt...but hunting was the plan.

Even though I expend 99.999% of my ammo at paper, the purpose/plan is still hunting. I also break my share of clays as well.

At this stage of life my hunting is more just being "out there" than a bag limit. I don't even care if I don't shoot anything. I've even been known to "pull off" for an intentional miss just so I didn't have to clean a game animal! Heresy! ;)

ps: Art...Summer of '41....a pretty good movie as I recall!

I punch paper way more than I hunt, but the purpose for punching paper is to be proficient with my hunting rifles.

Range time is fun and all, but nothing beats having a trophy buck in your crosshairs.

I've never cared for hunting. I don't have the desire to shoot an animal. I understand how the meat I eat daily has made it to my plate but I get no joy from the kill in the hunting I have done. I do enjoy the stalk/hunt side, but not the killing. If I could shoot them with nerf guns it would be as much if not more fun.

I really like shooting steel. It's what draws at me the most. I tried the budget side (if there is one) of bench rest and lost interest due to the money pit that game was, not to mention all the old men bickering online about each other and who's theory on what makes the best (insert equipment topic of the week). Service Rifle was fun but not really a long term hook. Then I bought a few steel plate targets at a gun show and found new entertainment. I can shoot all day and listen to the clang, and it doesn't seem to matter if it's from a .22lr or a .30+ magnum. If anything I lean more towards the .22lr side since I don't have to reload to shoot those all day on the cheap, I don't have to collect brass, and the ranges I have available to me are more than enough to become challenging with a proper target(<300 yards). The big boys are fun, but considering I can shoot an entire mag out of a 15-22 for what I can load a single round of .308 or .30-06 match ammo for it's a hard sell especially if the range is limited to 100 yards.

Put me down as a non-hunter. It's not what I am and it's not why I own firearms. I tried it and couldn't get behind it. I do love shooting though, even if not so much paper punching either.

This needs a "both" category.. I am 95% paper puncher, but I hunt every so often to keep the skill set..

I was a hunter but stopped hunting after my grandfather was no longer able to go and eventually passed. Now primarily a paper puncher but am going to try my luck deer hunting on my in-laws' land this fall.

Hunter, with paper punching in between hunts.

Nothing satisfies me more than a meal of a freshly butchered animal I've put in the sweat, blood and tears to earn. My ideal life would involve never buying meat, fish or fowl.

The poll went about as expected.

56.2% Hunt, and 43.8% shoot at paper, for a difference of 12.4%

I couldn't participate in the poll because I do both.

Been hunting since I killed my first sparrow with a BB gun at age 5...over 40 years ago. Went through the phase where I thought I needed to fill every tag and kill as much game as possible. Now I hunt pretty much for two reasons: food and relaxation. If we have plenty of venison, I go out looking for big bucks though and many times I go out and sit with a rifle just to watch the deer.
But I also love to target shoot especially with rifle. I have a 0 to 100 yd. range and for practicing High Power a 200 yd. 13" metal target for offhand, and a 36" metal target @ 600 yds. for prone.

I started real young hunting lizards in Presidio Texas. I remember paying $5.95 for my Daisy BB gun that I purchased at a 5 and dime store. Pops used to pay me 25 cents an hour, so that was a lot of work and real expensive for me. I was around 7 years old.

Paper

All I have done with guns is punch paper metal and clays.

That certainly doesn't mean I will never hunt at some point in my future but so far have just never had the opportunity/desire to do so.

Many hunters I suspect are drawn to firearms for that express purpose: hunting. For me, my interest lies mainly in their history and the mechanical nature of their function and the machining (for older firearms) that went into their production.

I really enjoy hunting. I love being in the mountains, looking for game. Truth to tell, though, a big game animal has to be real, real unlucky to find its way into my crosshairs. OR I have to have done everything right, and been real, real lucky, to boot.

Small game, I hunt every year, and get a lot of doves, some quail, a few rabbits. Big game, it got a little depressing, so I stopped for a while, but I started up again last year.

All that said, if I couldn't hunt, I'd still shoot, every chance I get.

I cant even IMAGINE "NOT" doing both! Shooting compliments hunting.

It would suck not to have the opportunity to hunt! Where i live, hunting is just a normal pastime/passion.

To me, I would rather be a part of the natural order of life. Participate in it.
At "times" It seems down right silly NOT too hunt if your a shooter. If you have the opportunity.

But I respect that people are different, and dont like the same things.

Man! Game animals just taste too good not to hunt! Lol!

Take care guys! Hunters/shooters alike!

I do shoot paper, even keep some of the better targets as 'trophies' Nothing wrong with paper, but I haven't figured out how to cook it.

We are all hunters.

Those who punch paper do so for fun or competition, but many do so to hone skills needed for war, home defense, self defense, and so on.

Skills are honed, shots taken, in the event that even if the individual may never take it, they can make it count when the time comes.

This encompasses both those who hunt four legged game, those who MUST hunt two legged, or those who protect themselves from all the above.

Just saying.

Occasionally, I deer hunt, but most of my hunting is for gobblers in the Spring. I have an unnatural talent for calling up Tom. Lately, I spend my time punching paper and I feel good about that.

This will be redundant, but I started out as a plinker, went to hunting small game, shooting rimfire rifles, graduated to larger game and handguns and shotguns. I love to shoot about all smokeless firearms, have competed in many kinds of shooting events, but love hunting the most.

Hunting grouse, deer, turkey and varmints are my favorite outdoor activities (not counting golf).

I learned gun repair and improvement along the way.
