I'm looking for a left handed bolt gun on a short action. I think that limits me to a savage, but I don't want the accutrigger. is it possible to get a savage these days without the accutrigger.

Look for an older used pre-accutrigger Savage, they aren't uncommon. Also Remington occasionally makes a run of short action lefty 700s, you could look for one of these as well, but you will pay a lot more than the Savage.

Savage owner here (lefty) and love it . .but without the accu-trigger I don't know. I've heard that Ruger is going to make the M77 this year in left hand and supposedly CZ is going to make their rifles in a left hand. I've been too busy to run those down. Seems like model 700's come and go in availability.

I wonder if they ever make the "Stevens" models in left-hand? Those don't have the accu-trigger.

Regards,
Dave

I don't like the accutrigger on a rifle. it's fine as a safely on a glock, but I don't like the pull on a rifle. I've got a custom savage 110L in 257 ackley that is terrific, so I"ve got no problem with a savage, but don't want accutrigger. I've got a friend with a handy little ruger 77 in 223 that i admire a great deal and would like to find something similar too, thus the short action request. As far as I can tell, remington, browning, ruger, and everybody else only make their lefty guns on a long action. or a short cartridge in a long action receiver.

You could look at Stevens rifles. They're essentially Savages without the Accutrigger, or so I hear. They might make left handed guns.

Edit: Nevermind, I just looked on Savage's website. They didn't list any Stevens Left handed models.

I've been begging Ruger for years to make the ultra-light, the compact, or the frontier models in a lefty version. Apparently, the just ain't feelin' the love! Best bet is an older Savage or a new one and replace the trigger group.

greyling- i really struggled w/ the left hand rifle thing when i was shopping for my daughter's rifle. because i finally ran out of patience, we went savage/accutrigger, and i don't think i could have possibly done any worse. fortunately, as a new/young shooter my daughter won't know the difference, but i sure do, and i would be irate if i had to have that abomination for myself. wish i woulda knew then what i know now...

for your specific query... you can either replace the trigger w/ an aftermarket trigger (~$100 on top of the price of the gun), or you can be more patient than i, and keep hunting for the gun you want. i believe one of the local shops has a left hand short action 700 in right now on the used rack. if you're interested, i'll check to be sure and let you know.

I have a Ruger M77 in left hand that shoots pretty good. It's a long action because it's a 7mm Rem Mag, but they make them in .308 and the like.

I don't like the accutrigger on a rifle. it's fine as a safely on a glock, but I don't like the pull on a rifle.

If you haven't tried a accutrigger yet, give it a try- you might be amazed. They have nothing in common with the craptastic Glock trigger, and might very well be one of the best triggers offered on a factory production rifle today.

I've pulled the trigger on their display guns, and yes, you can make them light, but I consider the safety bit to be like taking up slack. who wants to take up monster amounts of slack on a target rifle? I will accept a bad pull on a defense pistol, but not a scoped rifle. may have to look into replacing a trigger. or finding an old gun. and amen to the rem 700 being neither light nor cheap.

The safety portion of the trigger is not 'take-up,' it mere deactivating the safety. The trigger on the one Savage in my home has almost no creep, breaks like glass and has unperceptable overtravel.

who wants to take up monster amounts of slack on a target rifle?

It sounds like you have your mind made up anyhow, but a trigger, factory or aftermarket that is as good as the Accutrigger will set you back a few hundred $$s.

I agree that once you take up the slack, or deactivate the safety, the trigger is nice. but call it what you will, I don't like that first part. if you could pin it back or remove the safety we might have a winner, but as it is, I think I'll pass. I like most other things about savage though.
