I'm looking for a good hunting scope for my rifle. I've looked over some other threads on the forum and it seems SuperSniper scopes are a great deal. The problem with those scopes in my situation is that I need a scope that will gather as much light as possible, as most of my hunting is done at dusk. The only other scope I've had experience with is a weatherby 3-9x44mm. I'd like a scope that will work better towards dark and a closer zoom. What are my options?

I'd like to keep price as low as possible, under 400 would be good, under 300 would be better, under 200 would be best....But this will be a lifelong weapon, I will spend the extra money if neccessary.

I think the SS is fixed so it might not be the best choice. All scopes will help you see better at dusk. The burris fullfeid II and leopold rifleman are two great american made scopes for 200$ Good Luck

Just a slight correction to that; yes the FFII scopes are a good quality scope. However the 3x9x40, 4.5x14.44, & 6x20x40 scopes in that line are not made in USA.

I just bought a Burris FFII 3-9x40 and I agree it's a good scope. I bought mine off Ebay, from a good seller, (in nickle) for $200, and the black matte ones are going for around $150. I can pass along the respectable and reliable seller info if you wish. It is very similar to my last Nikon Monarch, but it's nitrogen purged and it seems a bit more stout. Optics seem respectable for the few range uses I have had, but I've done a decent amount of glassing at low light. Again it's close if not slightly better than my Nikon Monarch.

IMO, you can't go wrong for the price.

First off I disclaim being a scope snob. I don't have the money for a zeiss or some of the $1000 stuff but a real good quality scope is an important addition to your gear.

That being said you can get a real fine used Leupold off of ebay for under $400.

I'd think long and hard about going to a higher power than a 9X. If your game starts running and you have the scope cranked up to 14X you will have a devil of a time keeping it in your field of view. If you can see the game with a 3 power you can shoot it.

If you get a VXIII in a 3X9 you will love the scope at dusk and it will be a worthwhile addition to your hunting gear. Leupold has a lifetime warranty so don't let used put you off. Your going to use it for hunting anyway so some added personality in the form of reasonable use is a free benefit of buying used!

After a little research and help from your inputs, I think I'll get something with a 9x or 10x max power, and a 40mm objective lense. Most scopes I can find are this size. Thanks for the help yall, now i have a little more insight when I go to buy it.

I like the Nikon Buckmasters scope. The price doesn't show the quality. I was suprised that a 200 dollar scope was so well made.
