My youngest is looking for a new light gathering scope for deer/hog hunting. I haven't bought a hunting scope in a long time and have no idea as where to steer him. He's looking to spend no more than $150. or less if possible. Currently the 336 wears an older Weaver.

A 2-7x33mm Redfield would be the ticket. They are made and warrantied by Leupold. Or, a Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32mm.

Okay, it's a scant more than $150.00 (though you might be able to find one for that if you look hard enough), but the Vortex Diamondback 1.75-5x32mm would make for a nifty scope on a rifle like that. The Weaver Classic-V 1-3x20mm, Burris FF-II 2-7x35, and Nikon ProStaff 2-7x32mm are also decent and pretty close to making budget.

:)

The key ,in my opinion of course,to scoping a carbine is to not over scope the rifle.
Try finding one that is short in over all length and no more than 11 ounces in weight and the objective diameter does not exceed 32-33mm's so you do not lose the lightweight handling ability of the carbine.
I bought for my Marlin 336 a now discontinued, but still available if you look a Burris Timberline 2x7x26.
Very short and lightweight and the optics are very bright and clear.
I paid $160.00 for this scope a couple of years ago.
