Hey everyone,

I've been looking at getting a new scope for my hunting/long-range rifle. I would really like a scope with a MRAD-style reticule for obvious reasons (holdover, ranging, etc.) but I really don't like how the knobs are exposed on all of the "tactical" scopes. I have this nightmare of bumping one of the knobs as I'm shouldering the rifle to take a big 'ol buck...

Also, most "tactical" scopes are pretty heavy. I want something light-weight.

So here's my question: Why don't "they" (Leupold, Nikon, etc.) make a lightweight hunting-style scope (aka covered adjustment knobs) with a "tactical" reticule? This would seemingly be the best of both worlds.

Here is a picture of the reticule I have in mind: 10XReticle.jpg

Thanks,
- TNG

Call Leupold and have them make you the scope you want. Several years ago a friend ordered a (I think) VXIII with a specific reticle. They probably still do that.

I've not had any issue with target turrets getting moved and I don't baby rifles that I use. I do have a bushnell w/ an Ill reticle and the Ill adjustment on that scope does get turned on w/o my knowledge. BTW, it's a 3-12x44 and not much heavier than a similar powered VX3 w/ 30mm tube would be.

i've had knobs spun while negotiating barricades etc with target style turrets. it stinks. the more tactical solution is known as 'locking turrets' which just prevents them from turning when you lock them. lots of scope mfg offer that as an option now

Just got off the phone with Leupold. The VX2 can be ordered with a standard mil-dot reticule, but not with the "Tactical milling reticule" like what I posted originally. They suggested the Mark AR line of scopes, but unfortunately those knobs are exposed and do not have the locking feature.

Check out the Bushnell Elite Tactical 1-6.5x24 SMRS with the BTR-2 reticle. Not really a long range scope, but it has everything else you're looking for.

Another option (but very expensive) is to have US Optics build you one. I don't know for a fact they can do it, but I'm pretty sure they can put that combination together.

That SMRS looks pretty sweet, and I like the feature-list. Unfortunately, I don't have the coin for one. I was hoping to keep this project under $400 or so :(

Once I win the lotto, I'll look into the US Optics option ;)

Haha. Sorry, but I didn't bother to look at the price first. I assumed it was less than my Bushnell ET, and we all know what happens when you assume...

If you win the lottery, you have to buy ME a US Optics, too. :D
