All,

I'm new to the long range optics world and need your help. It seems there are so many scopes to choose from I just feel lost!

I'm looking for a scope in the $600-$700 range to be mounted over a Savage .308 rifle. My wish list for the scope is as follows:

-Variable Power: any starting point up to about 30x. I'd be ok if the max was only 15x, but preference is for more magnification.

-Any flavor of a Mil dot reticule (army, marine, hash marks, etc.)

-tactical or target turrets

This scope will be used mainly for target shooting at 600 yards, but I'd like the ability to go out to 1,000. There may be hunting applications in the future, but not currently.

Some scopes I have discovered are

Nikon 6.5-20x 44 (NK6605BR)
Bushnell Elite Tactical 5-15x 40 (BHET5154)
SWFA Super Sniper 3-9x

This question has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it through a search so please don't flame me too hard! ;)

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

In that price range my first pick would be a Viper PST. Amazing glass with all the features you would expect/need from a long range tactical optic. I would suggest you opt for one that uses a FFP (first-focal plane) reticle and has a parallax adjustment of some sorts because the farther you try to reach out the more parallax issues will arise. Normally a Vortex scope with these features are a bit out of your given budget, but you'll find it well worth the price.
Vortex also has a warranty on all of their riflescopes that Leupold can't hold a candle to.

The SWFA Super Sniper scope you mentioned is also a fine long range scope for the money, but I would suggest looking for a higher magnification that 3-9x for long rage accuracy.

Looks like that Nikon is not a current model. 5-20 and 6-24 Monarchs have limited elevation adjustment and don't come with mildot reticles, according to the website.
The Bushnell also lacks adequate elevation adjustment for your use.

You might look at Vortex, Sightron, and Weaver.
