Just today, I got this in my email, from the Texas Gun Owners mailing list.

Just look at what it did to this deer!

This was posted in another thread a while back. The problem with shooting a deer with a cannon loaded with canister shot (each probably being .69caliber) is you have no way of garunteeing where the individual peices of shot will hit. Therefore you have no way of garunteeing a clean humane kill. Yeah, I see where they hit in the photo. It's still no garuntee. I wont even go into legality, but I'd hate to have to explain it to a game warden and possibly to a judge. Some people couldn't understand why I had a problem with it the first time it came up.

Mustang98,

I did not see it the first time, however yes I do have a problem with it as well.

This type of activity only goes to further the out-cry from the left, those that hate guns and hunting. It gives them fuel to attempt to ban more stuff. Responsible Gun/firearm/cannon owner's attempt to show that they are responsible and law abiding. And then comes a yaho that blows all that asside while thumbing his nose at the law. Yes, it would be cool to make and fire the cannon, but Hunting... give me a break...

It only takes One aw sh-t wipes out 100 at-a-boys...

Gee, I would if he ever was tracked down and got into any trouble over this? Law enforcment is getting good at that, especialy if he is hosting a website. The picture of the deer could be pretty damning circumstancual evidence, with his discription.... Just thinking out loud...

I've seen it before also. I don't see anything ethically wrong with it, unless the cannon is used like a puntgun like oldtie waterfowlers used to use to wipe out dozens of animals at a time. I'd rather see a deer drop dead on the spot from being hit with a 1/2 dozen large caliber balls than see deer on opening day running with a jaw or leg shot off by some yahoo taking potshots with a 30-06 or 12 guage shotgun that he's not even qualified to operate.

Of course you have to weigh this against it most likely being highly illegal just abut everywhere like this. Then again, laws and common sense are often not on the same plane of existance with state wildlife agencies.

All of the bullet holes in the carcass look the same, I think the picture is a fake.

Are those exit wounds? 1,000 ft/sec muzzle velocity; what, maybe 800 ft/sec at 100 yards? .69 lead shot? Those holes look big, for one thing. And, would there be total penetration at that range? If so, at that velocity, I don't believe there would be expansion. A little deformation, yeah, but not to make what look like two-inch holes upon exit...

The spacing does look rather suspect, BUT : Art those 12ga round balls DO make quite a "splash" when they hit flesh at 800fps! I have shot a deer years back with a .69 flintlock and Did get a similar wound on skinned carcass.:scrutiny:

I'm no entry-wound expert, but this my friends is a classic example of a lazy Photoshop weenie. Forget the placement (which is pretty arbitrary at best), but look at the little red slash below each shot (tailward). The little red mark would not be repeated so exactly on each impact. Also look at the two little projections of red to the right of each impact, (ventrally from the center of each wound). I would guess they took one shot, and pasted it over and over. $20 says this is a Fark picture.

How come there is no bruising and why don't the holes have any depth? If the innards have been taken out why can't you see through the chest shots? Doesn't look like any deer I've ever shot with a BP rifle nor a centerfire neither for that matter. My vote is that this is fake.
