Who here hunts with cowboy guns? Make, model, caliber, etc.

I'd love to hear your stories.

When I leave the house I always take the Colt SAA 44 spl with front sight copied from Elmer Kieth. Long guns are a 1881 Marlin 45-70, 1873 Winchester, and a Spencer carbine 56-50.

LOL, I am really feeling old today. They weren't cowboy guns, they were just old guns everyone shot with. Winchester 94 in 30-30 and 25-35. Great uncle hunted with a Texas Ranger 30-40 krag. His FIL always carried an old Colt in 44-40. Grandfather went all modern with a Savage 99 in 250-3000 that he bought in 1937.

Assuming by "Cowboy Guns" you mean guns used in Cowboy Action Shooting, I do. I have an 1894 Marlin in 45 Colt that is just about perfect for deer in the New England woods, and a 12 ga SXS Coach gun that is just the ticket for Grouse. Whenever I'm in the woods, hunting or not, I have my 45 Vaquero with me.

Shot my first elk through the iron sights of a Winchester 94 Classic 30-30.
I always carry my Ruger Blackhawk .357 in the woods, and really hope to get to use it on deer or elk, but when the opportunity arises within 40 yards, I've always swung the .270 up for the shot.
Last September, I took a mule deer at about 26-30 yards with the .270 but I wish I had had enough time to pull out the revolver for that close one.

Chuckwagon, riding shotgun with a , dog eared 12 bore and punching them dawgies [ err groundhogs] .

Single Action Ruger .44 got in some punching dawgies too...

These little dawgies will cause live stock to break a leg.

Model 94, 30-30, 170 grainers, deer, rabid canines, feral cats, rabid raccoons...
and if'n ya'll want to drill holes in a drum for BBQ - knock yerself out.

30-30 does this so much easier and no worry about extension cords or battery packs for cordless drills.

Head 'em up! Move 'em out! Rawhide!

I hunt grouse (legal here in WA) with my Marlin Model 39, Deer with my Marlin 1894 in 45 Colt, Bear & Elk with my 1895. Almost aways carry my 45 Colt Ruger New Vaquero, haven't used it on fur but I have hunted grouse with it... Oh and I shot a few rats in the barn with a single six...

I own and hunt with 2 different Marlin .450 1895s (M and MR), and am seriously "jonesing" for the 1895 Cowboy (26" .45-70) to hunt with and to shoot-for-fun. Does this count?

I don't hunt with cowboy guns. I hunt with classic late 19th century state of the art weapons, manufactured before they ruined the sport with smokeless powder, telescopic sights and other useless technology.

I have some Korean War era armor piercing '06 I have saved for about 30 years thinking, "one of these days I am gonna use this stuff to punch holes in somthin". At the rate I am using it up, virtually not, I am gonna die of old age and still have the stuff.
The bullet cores do make a wonderful punch if held with pliers though.

OH, on to topic, Yep I bought me a Winchester 94, 30 WCF made in 49 the year of my birth and put some venison in the freezer with it.

I think this spring when the groundhogs pop out, I'm going to try my 1894C loaded with .38 rounds. It's illegal to use it for game hunting here in Ohio, so I'll go after varmints.

OH25shooter,

I used to shoot prairie dogs with a Rossi 45 Colt and a Uberti 44-40. Heck of a lot of fun!

You bet! A Rossi .45 Colt carbine, and one of two old-style Vaqueros. For hogs in heavy brush, it doesn't get much better than that!

1887 hammer SxS coach gun for pheasants hunting over pointers this last winter. Quite nostalgic. And the dead pheasants couldn't tell if they got it with a Citori super grade or the old SxS.

They're in my freezer and will taste better 'cause there's a story and good memories of a fun hunt with my son.
