Hunting with handguns.

Nice. Does .30-30 extract without any stickiness? Not sure, probably not the problem in an SA gun that some DAs have had with bottle neck cartridges. My personal choice is the TC contender. I have 4 barrels, but hog/deer is with a .30-30 shooting a 150 Nosler BT over 3031 to about 2050 fps. It kills like the hammer of Thor. :D

No issues extracting. The cylinder is slicker than snot. Magnum Research did an excellent job on this revolver.

I have had lots of deer come within range but nothing I wanted to take at the time. Mostly young deer that do not know any better.

I want a BFR in 475 Linebaugh/480 Ruger. I view it as one of the best overall hunting calibers available. I tend to think a larger bullet diameter is more effective than a smaller faster bullet in a handgun. It is one of the reasons I have a hankering for the 500 S&W versus 460 S&W. But everyone has their preferences and that is what makes the world go around.

I already had 45/70 rifles so the BFR in 45/70 was a logical choice for me. Dies, brass and all the needed reloading components helped make the choice easy.

The .475/.480 would be a good choice if I was to do it again. I'm watching a local sale on a .500 BFR in hopes that the price drops a little.

My deer gun is a T/C Contender 14" in 357 Herrett. Pretty mild by today's standards but it's effective.

If you need more'n a .30-30, you are hunting something other than deer/hogs. If you need more than the .45/70, you're hunting in Africa....:D

I have the Ruger Blackhawk Hunter (Bisley) with a 4X on it. Last deer I took with it was a 6-point whitetail at 65 yards. Hit right where I was looking-double lung shot-quick recovery. I love hunting with a handgun.

I also use a TC Contender super 14" with a 30-30 barrel. It has taken quite a few deer.

Last year, I used a S&W N-frame in .45 colt to take my deer-50 yds, iron sights.

I've also taken some hogs with one handgun or another.

Did I tell you I LOVE handgun hunting! Addicting as heck!

(BTW-reloads in all the above cases.)

pikid89, THAT is a great choice. They are really nice guns and great shooters. They are like a Ruger Blackhawk cross bred with a Swiss watch. VERY tight tolerances, solid as a tank. They are a bit costly, but IMHO, worth every penny.

^over the summer i went out west with my family and we drove through Freedom, WY and stopped by the factory, and i must agree....the pieces they build are sweet indeed

I just use my plain old GP-100 .357 with factory sights.

If I want a 3 lb gun to hunt with, I'll use my Ruger 77 .308 compact rifle. Bit over 3 lbs but at just 6 lbs, with scope, it's a mighty handy little rifle.

I love the freedom, mobility, and challenge of handgun hunting. I have taken several deer with handguns, but don't forget small game. An accurate .22 auto (mine is a Ruger MKII) breathes new life into squirrel and rabbit hunting.
