Hypothetical: If handguns were banned tomorrow...

Most likely a Glock 19. Because of it's size, it would be easy to conceal and 9mm ammo would probably be the easiest to scrounge.
 
If I didn't already have one, I'd buy the HK 4: with change of barrel & mag, will chamber & fire .22LR, .25 auto, .32ACP and .380. I should be able to find ammo to shoot for some time. The HK 4 is a light subcompact - at least I think of it as such.

It occurs to me that other restrictive & repressive restrictions are likely to accompany the banning of handgun sales; sounds like time to stock up on gear for "camping out"...

If I could buy only 1 more gun I'd get teh only caliber I don't have a S&W 629 5" full lug barrel.
 
The "must be subcompact" is probably getting ignored because he qualified it as being necessary for concealment. You can conceal a shotgun if you really try.

I'm not a big guy and I can definitely stick a mid-size like a G19 IWB and it'll be pretty invisible.

But getting back to the question: I'm not sure it's relevant. You know the saying, "When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns"? That means that if it happened, and they're all illegal, anyone owning one is a criminal.

Here's another saying: "We can all hang together or we can hang separately." Asking a question like "which handgun would you secretly squirrel away" is assuming we'd hang separately as criminals.

I'd rather muse on which rifle or shotgun I'd be using while hanging together with the rest of you to go fix the handgun issue. Because for that purpose, handguns are not effective.
 
WoW! Seems so easy to answer until you try.

I already have the SP101 and a P239 so.....

A HK P2000SK in .40 S&W.

Given this EOTWAWKI scenario I might just break down and buy a Sub compact Glock 10MM.
 
I would just buy all the components hereabouts, and order more. :)

If they had a nice 1911 laying around, I guess I would have to get that.

Glock 26

After much trial and error... these are the two that I choose.

(I'd take a 640 if I had to)

Yeah, that is what I was going for. Concealment more so than a true "sub-compact"
 
Speaking personally, the acquisition of a new firearm (at least a pistol) wouldn't be the first thing on my mind if I was being legislated one step towards being a de facto felon...

As for the question of, "if you could own a single pistol for the rest of your life, and only that pistol, which would it be?" Hard to say. Possibly a 1911, possibly a S&W revolver, possibly a CZ or BHP.
 
I wouldn't need to run out and buy one. Already have several to choose from.

My recommendation would be a Colt Defender or a Springfield Micro Compact:

Both have been solid, 100% reliable performers for me since purchase around the first of this year. I carry either of them frequently, and the alloy frames contribute to a comfortable day-long carry. The 1911 platform speaks for itself, as does the 45 ACP round. There are several effective commercial loads that have proven to be reliable in these guns.

In a revolver, I'd recommend the S&W M65LS 3" Ladysmith in 357 Magnum. It's a little on the large-ish side of a "compact" but it's a sweet carry piece with an exceptional trigger job right from the factory.

I'm good to go.

Anything small and concealable in 9mm or .38 would be a wise choice. Since I already have that covered probably a full size 9mm and lots of mags, just casue.
 
I'd consider another J-frame snubbie, wouldn't be too picky unless I had some choices. A duplicate of my 642 or even a 442 would be a nice backup in case anything happened to it.

However, the gun stores here would probably have already marked them up to twice what they are worth expecting the inevitable huge crowd. So, I'd just leave and be satisfied with what I already have.

As has been stated before, "if it is time to bury guns it is also time to dig them up."
 
well I have 2 Glock 27's which would be my first choice.

But if I had to pick something else it would be either a mini 1911, or an XD in the smallest size.

as for caliber, I go with .40 as I feel it will be around and it is a good tradeoff between more power than 9mm and more mag capacity than .45
