I am a dough-head. Now I need help with what to do.

I need some help with this issue.
I have a CCW permit for the state of Utah. I took a trip to Las Vegas last weekend. Las Vegas does not recognize the Utah permit, so when I hit the Border town of Mesquite, I locked my Bulgarian Makarov in the Trunk. Then when I got to our hotel, I brought my CCW in and put it in the top drawer of the dresser. Then we proceeded to have a great weekend. We woke up late on Sunday, hurried and packed up and began the drive home. 3 hours down the road, I realize that my Makarov was still back in that drawer. After soiling my pants, I decided to call the Hotel Security because I noticed that they were armed and thus were probably my best bet. I did not want to just call the front desk and have someone panic and freak out on me. I talked to a friendly guy who went and grabbed it for me. He told me to call back on Monday and talk to his Leutenant to work out having it shipped to me. I tried several times Monday and Tuesday and could not get hold of this guy. Then my wife finally got hold of him today. He told her that they gave it to the Las Vegas Police. He said that after 5 days they do this. It was not 5 days! They knew who it belonged to! I don't know what to do now. I don't have anyone's name with the LVPD and I don't know if I'll get in trouble when I call them.
What should I do?

I'd just call information for the LVPD non-emergency number.

You'll get routed around, be patient, and then eventually be put in touch with someone attached to the property room. Give them the particulars such as the date, hotel, room number and your Mak's serial number and hopefully they'll help you.

Presumably they'll run your name, DOB, and SSN to be sure you're not a felon, and check the gun's S/N to be sure it's not stolen and ship it back.

Losing a gun is not a crime in NV, AFAIK, so you have nothing to worry about there.

Definitely a lesson here (like you need to be told LOL). I NEVER, repeat NEVER put my weapon in a drawer when staying at a motel. If I'm not carrying it, it's always left in plain sight on the nightstand whenever I'm in the room. Just too much chance of forgetting it otherwise.

Like Andrew said, give them a call, try to be calm and polite. (I hope there understanding.)
I'm sure your not the first one to do that, (and probably not the last) Worst case? They keep the gun and you pay the man?

Let us know how it goes. For what it's worth, your story made my gut flip. I can't imagine what it was like on the drive home.

So far you seem very lucky. Mine would have never turned up after the first call. It would either be a new addition to someones collection or used in a drive by.

Call the hotel.....

get the incident number from security...they have a number and officer's name when they turn anything like that over to Metro. Then the Evidence Vault can track it through the number! May have to come back and get it personally though.

I took off my watch in a filling station rest room once to wash my hands, and neglected to put it back on. I still remove my watch when washing my hands these many years later, but it goes in a trousers pocket, not on a shelf.
