Well i have been shooting for a better part of 15yrs and i have always been an import guy. My first hand gun was a Sig 226 in 1992. Since then i have always owned either Sigs, H&Ks or Walthers of all kinds. My current everyday carry piece is the Walther PPS which i love. It is slim, accurate and easily concealable.

I am good friends with Chris Costa of Magpul Dynamics and he convinced me to try the M&P9 since he has made it his go to piece. Coming from him, i didnt even question it and just went and purchased a new one for a great price of $499 and with the $50 rebate from S&W it is an amazing deal. Needless to say that i took the gun to my Fraternal Order of Police range this weekend and put about 400rounds thru it. I shot it from 3yards to 35yards at paper and steel.

I am absolutely amazed by this little gun. The trigger was a little gritty at first but by the end of the session had already improved. What is amazing is how quick the gun recovered from shot to shot and the recoil seemed like i was shooting a 380 out of similar frame size gun. I had brought out my Sig 239 and walther PPS and drill after drill i shot better and faster with the M&P. I was rapid firing from 25yards on 1/2 scale IPSC steel target and banging steel on every shot. It seemed like i could not miss even if i tried.

Finally i went back 35yards and measured with my Zeiss range finder and put up three shoot and see targets. I put 8 rnds in each M&P9, Walther PPS, and Sig 239 and wanted to check to see which one i could be more accurate form that distance with slow fire (2-3seconds between shots). As much as i liked the M&P9 i wanted to prove to myself that my beloved Sig was just as accurate and tried my best all three guns. My M&P groups were the tightest, followed by Sig and Walther. My M&P groups were about 4-5" at 35yards which to me was pretty amazing. With the Sig they had opened to about about 6-7" and with the Walther 8-9".

Obviously self defense would not be taking place at 35yards but it is good to know if **** ever hits the fan that this gun can be shot so accurate that far out. From closer distances accuracy really doesnt matter but no question that felt muzzle flip is significantly reduced compared to the other two to allow faster double taps. Based on Costa's recommendations i have also ordered the Apex Tactical hard sear and radiused plunger. I am sure with the new trigger the gun will be even that much better.

Needless to say that i am a new believer and thinking that i may have to also buy the full size M&P. I have shot my buddy's Glock 19 several times before and despite having the 3.5 connector and grip reduction by Boresight, it still did not shoot as well as this M&P did. I dont want to start a pissing contest, but this is just my evaluation.

Welcome to the brotherhood, alpha. The M&P used to be one of the best kept secrets of our trade but they're fast becoming the go-to pistols in the LEO and competition world. The trigger definitely gets better with time and the trigger is also easy to work on. Glad you like it and keep shooting it! It gets even better. ;-)

I was quite impressed with the one I had as well. :) The only thing I didn't like was its slide thickness; it was not as comfortable to carry IWB holstered as a slimmer gun. It was, however, 100% reliable from the very first round, something very few guns I've had could claim.

I shopped for quite a while before settling on the M&P 9mm, I got the full size and took the two mags in stead of the $50 though. So far I have been as impressed as you, accuracy is very good, recoil is light, and so far no problems. The first 17 rounds from 25 yards looked like this.

I expect that with some use and maybe a slight sight adjustment it (or I) will only get better.

Alpha, you and I have very similar tastes in handguns.

In the beginning I resisted the M&P although I do own many Smith & Wessons. I finally got an M&P9C because the deal was too good to pass on. It was $300 in like new condition except that it had no mag. The gun has been flawless and extremely accurate. It's my everyday Jeep gun that I depend upon without reservation.

I'm a longtime Sig guy who recently picked up a M&P 9 fullsize with the rebate (I went for the extra mags) and I'm very pleased. The Sigs aren't going anywhere but once I get enough rounds through it, the M&P may be taking most of my house, carry and range duties.

Alpha take a look at the Apextactical.com I installed their Apex Hard Sear. Really nice difference. Eliminates grit, resets easier and breaks better too. No, I don't work for Apex, but I have read a lot of rave reviews on their product(s). Easy to install yourself too! I, like you really like the M&P9C.

A great little accessory for the M&P compact series is the X-Grip extension!...

Turn you carry gun into something more enjoyable to shoot TONS of ammo through at the range. I also use it for my spare mag i carry so in a worst of the worst case scenario my backup mag is a full capacity.

really makes the Compact more fun at the range.

I would like to have an M&P compact for carry. Just don't have the money to get one.

CubJ3,

I mentioned in the initial post that i had already ordered the Apex kit :) It came in today and i already installed it and WOW is all i can say. I got the hard sear plus the radius plunger that sits in the firing pin block and it is absolutely amazing. My trigger feels like 3.4-4lbs with almost no pre-travel and quick quick reset. I am in love even more!

Alpha, I bought the Apex parts then used them as a guide to stoning the factory parts. Another great source was burwell trigger job (info hosted by Dan Burwell). I put the factory parts into the next M&P I bought (9c) and will likely use it's parts in the 9L I ordered this week. Saves me $150 and is within a pound of the Apex upgrade.

Might be helpful since M&Ps tend to multiply.

Enjoy, stay safe and good shooting.

Congrats.

Yep, I think S&W has jumped back into the mainstream commercial & LE market for plastic guns with the M&P. ;)

If I'd handled and tried a M&P 9c before I bought my M&P 40c, I'd have bought the 9c. I didn't because I already have a handful of excellent small 9mm's (3 of which are S&W's) and I was still looking for a better .40 S&W (I now own 5).

Then, I tried a M&P 9c alongside my 40c at the range one afternoon and was surprised by how much better I liked it than the 40c (which I'm keeping anyway, because it does very well for a small .40 ... but it's still a .40 when i comes to comparing recoil management & controllability ;) ). A couple of the other instructors who shot both side by side felt the same (including, of course, the guy who owned the 9c).

Nice little gun. It won't replace the 3913 for overall balance, heft and 'lively feel' in my hand, but it does seem to 'better' my favored SW99 9c. ;)

I have a M&P 45 FS that is a tack-driver. It can easily equal the practical accuracy of my Colt Government XSE & SW1911SC 5" even out to 50 yards ... and even best them upon occasion.

Oh yeah, and as an armorer for the 3rd gen S&W's the 99 series and the M&P series, I'm also impressed with the M&P when it comes to armorer support.

It's about time S&W got back into the LE field in a big way, and the M&P pistol (& rifle) series is doing it for them.
