I recently picked up a new in the box M&P .40 with Crimson Trace grips. Since then I saw and handled a Walther PPS and fell in love with it. I want one. I don't have any attachment to the M&P at this point and I have to sell one to buy another so............

A couple questions..........

First, which would you choose and why? Simple enough question.

Second, how much accuracy will I lose going with this much smaller gun? I have heard the PPS's are very accurate for a small gun.

Third, which would probably be more reliable in the long run??

Forth, kinda off the subject but, what about the Walther P99? I like the looks of this gun as well, and love the way it feels in my hand.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As the owner of 5 M&P's, I will have to side with the platform that I love... The M&P of course.

The Walther PPS is just too skinny to grip comfortably, and the Walther P99 does not off anything that the M&P does not already give you... Except a higher price tag of course.

I suggest that you keep the M&P and invest in the $29 Apex Tactical sear upgrade. This 5 minute upgrade will make your M&P's trigger one of the sweetest available this side of a custom 1911. I have upgraded all of mine with the Apex sear... Even my two M&P Pro models. (It IS that good)

m&p 40.

the pps has a safety whereby if the snap on back strap snaps off, the gun is locked up. that's unacceptable to me. just MHO.

plus my mp40c fed anything i put into it, including widemouth federal hst jhp's.

Ax to grind on the M&P vs P99? Cause you glaringly overlook the decocker on the P99...

PS (HAHA not PPS) the P99 did all the M&P did first. ;) Strange that S&W did the importing of the P99 and then years later can't find any P99's in AS but what's this? Offering a M&P? interesting...

Do appreciate the price difference though. 50 bucks?

Depends on what you want, a nice range gun or a nice slim carry gun. I own both and they are purposed differently. The M&P is a fine gun, but CCW not so much. The PPS on the other hand is a really nice slim CCW. It shoots great, very accurate for such a small package. The back strap "safety" is a non-issue it is no worse than the sear disconnect lever in the M&P. Despite the myth, the back strap will not fall off rendering your PPS inoperable. Here is my thread on my recently purchased PPS, http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=511009. I also have a S&W99 (virtually the same as P99) that is also a very nice pistol. It was around long before the M&P series and is just as good a gun. While I really like the M&P platform ( I have 3), the PPS & S&W99 are also fine firearms. The PPS serves a CCW purpose for me, thin light and easier to conceal, it's that simple. BTW, I picked up my PPS (used) in .40S&W for $399.00 with 2 mags. ;):D

I have the PPS .40. There is virtually NO CHANCE that the back strap will come off, so don't let that disuade you. It never has to be removed. The capacity of your M&P is much greater than that of the PPS.

PPS - max 7 rounds. They come with 6 round magazines. 5 is also available.
M&P - well you know, but I believe it is 10 rounds, or maybe 10 + 1.

The PPS fits my smaller hands perfectly. In fact, I use the smaller of the two back straps provided.

The PPS is a dream to carry. Hence the name - Police Pistol Slim.

The M&P is a little less expensive, but the difference is not that great.

If you like the size of your pistol with regard to grip, holster carry, concealibility (if you cc) etc., I would keep it. If you need somthing a little smaller then get the PPS.

If you were closer I'd let you try mine out while I tried yours out and consider a swap.....

I think the quality of both guns is oustanding.

But, we are not, and I DO like the PPS.

Is the MP full size? I owned both the full and compact. I sold them both and kept my pps. For home defense I would take the MP any day over the PPS. For ccw I would not give up my pps for anything I know of that out there.

Just depends on what you want out of it...

I own an M&P and a PPS (Neither in .40 though). Both are great guns, but serve quite different purposes. CCW? PPS. HD? M&P.

Having picked one up, I am surprised you feel the back strap would come off unintentionally.

Not a dig. In the hand it seemed to me that it was designed with thought and consideration to this fear.

So, the opinion of the group is that the P99AS with decocker is NOT worth 150-175 more than a M&PXX?

The P99s attraction....

it's in the ergonomic and visual elements of the gun. The grip design alone is a marvel, and after you hold this gun, it should come as no surprise that Walther contracted Morini, the maker of some of the best target and competition grips that can be made (which, of course means that they find themselves in the hands of some of the best shooters in the world

The trigger is pretty amazing stock from the box on the AS.

IMO opinion regarding the PPS the ergonomics are not as well executed as the Kahr PM9/40. I found the Walther too large for pocket carry where as the Kahr could be. Walther is 4 ounces heavier. Kahr is 5.56 inches long, the Walther is 6.3. I still can't figure out the PPS niche. Maybe a great IWB or in a shoulder holster??

Had a PPS .40 and now have a S&W M&P Compact in 9mm. Both are great guns and either will serve well.

The PPS is much easier to carry at the price of capacity. The M&P has a frame mounted thumb safety (just like JMB intended) :) so I prefer that model. The backstrap on the PPS is not going to come off unless you want it to.

I will say the PPS in .40 is not a fun range gun after 75 rds or so. But for it's intended purpose it is a great gun.

No, I think the majority would say that the P99 AS is worth the extra. People tend not to like to spend extra though. BUT...

Currently the M&P is exactly 30 bucks more at impactguns.com. An example, not the rule. But impactguns is equal to buds guns.

I have never read someone saying the SA in the P99 is anything but uniquely perfect. Never. Google it. No one complains about the P99 AS trigger. Some complain about the DA. 'its hard.' Yep, :D that's what a double action is. But is is 100% consistent every time and easy to predict.

On the PPS its different. Essentially a Glock trigger. If you like that, that is what you get. Avoid the PPS with a H trigger. Not many out there but they are present.

I don't think you can compare the M&P to the P99 in triggers however. The extra $30 is a million dollars in difference.

I've got a PPS 9mm and a full sized M&P .40. I carry both (not at the same time (usually)).

Everyone at the range to whom I hand the PPS *thinks* it'll be awkward to shoot because of the thin grip. Then they shoot a mag or two, and are delighted with the gun. The trigger is definitely better than the M&P!

I find the recoil in 9mm on the PPS to be very mild. I can burn through 200 rounds w/o noticing any fatigue or wear & tear. I prefer to get back the extra 1 round of capacity over the .40 caliber in the smaller pistol, but in a full size M&P went with the 15+1 .40.

Both are great guns. I'd never tried to CC a full sized pistol before, and was delighted that it's as manageable as it is. For reference, I'm 5'11", 180#, 32" waist, and use a Crossbreed SuperTuck (for the M&P), and a CompTAC Minotaur for the PPS.

rhenriksen,

Thanks for the reply. I was kind of wondering in the back of mind if i would be able to CC the M&P. I have about an inch height wise on you and around 10 pounds. I have a 33" waist. Based on what you say, I guess there really is no need to get the PPS. I will just buy a good IWB holster and I should be fine carrying the M&P.

I appreciate all the reply's guys.

Good info there from rhenriksen.

I don't own the PPS. I own the fullsize M&P40 and I have a Kel-tec PF-9 for CCW. The M&P was my first gun and I CC'd it for more than a year. There were situations where I was concerned that I would be made (mostly on dates). The only times I was caught was bending over with a light shirt and one time a girl lifted up my shirt to see what was the hard thing she just bumped into.

I now carry the PF-9. It is a world better to live with as a CCW piece, than the fullsize M&P. I could still CCW the M&P, but it feels like a brick now. The M&P has nightsights and spends time on my nightstand. After almost 4,000 rounds through it, there has never been a failure due to the gun (only a few crappy reloads). I have complete faith in it.

Some people have noted issues with the PF-9. Both guns for me have been completely reliable. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Although, the PPS does look like a very attractive option!

I always seem to default to the larger gun---more shots---more comfortable and easier to shoot well------the PPS just feels like an odd shaped hard brick.

M&P with a top notch holster and find a way to carry it comfortably.
