I am Legend...

Hoping to take nephews when it comes to the 'cheapie' local thater.

The last man dystopia is one of my favorite sub-genres of fiction and film.

"The Quiet Earth" is a rather understated example (from Australia or N.Z.) and worth a look BTW (thanks for mentioning it nwilliams). Weapons used (as I recall) are m16a2's which were very 'new' looking back in the mid 80's.

SPOILER ALERT

Why, aftre the zombies broke in, and he was shooting at the one with the 900 round magazine, did they have to make the sound of the firing pin dropping on an empty chamber - clicking like it was full auto? even if it was semi and he pulled it that fast, it wouldn't make the noise......gah.

Wife and I saw it yesterday.

The story was quite different from the book, but WS's acting in playing the character Neville looked pretty convincing in the aspect of him losing his sanity and humanity.

As mentioned before the CGI wasn't very good.

The biggest disappointment to me was the ending- the ending was completely different from the original story and was made sugarcoated.

I liked the movie, my wife loved the movie,

saw it last night so depositing my two cents.

Will had to show off his buffness in an exercise scene.

As with all these monster/zombie/space bug movies how in the hell do they support themselves. In this one hundreds of zombies but only one piece of fresh meat Mr Will. Maybe they are still intelligent enough to operate can openers so I will let this one slide.

Mr. Neville is no hunter for sure. Looked cool chasing a herd of deer through New York in a mustang with an AR15 though. Glad to see he switched to a more suitable vehicle for running over zombies later.

No slight to the AR15 fans but when confronted by a couple lions and deer hunting at least a 308 FAL would of been preferred. Those zombies acted like drugged supercharged amok junkies so a little harder hitting rounds could be useful.

The zombie dogs looked cool. Overall I agree the CGI was second tier but so was the whole movie.

His SHTF outdoor explosives are cool but considering he has the whole city as a resource he could of done better than living in his old apartment but I can buy sentimental attachment to the place.

On a sober note the virus gone amok scenario is the one that scares me more than all the nukes set off at once as an end of world as we know it.

That's one of the big things that bothered me about the movie- it looked cool to go screaming through the city in a musclecar, but in the book, neville was very careful about his vehicles- if they broke down or he crashed them, he would have been as good as dead, the vehicles were a lifeline that got him back to his home before sundown.

Three things:

1.) Don't come into a movie like this with High Expectations. Really......it's a blockbuster. Not a huge oscar winner, like "Unforgiven".

2.) Don't read a book, then go see the move. (Everyone, hopefully, by now realizes that very few movies are as good as the book.

3.) Don't over-analyze. If you think a whole movie is bad, b/c of one scene in the whole movie.....your probably too hard to please.

Notice too, when the deer run away, they play an elk bugle. (Which is relatively uncommon sound for a deer to make.)

Just eat your $20 bag of popcorn, $10 drink and enjoy.

;-)

"i am legend" is only one hollywood movie based on the r. matheson's original novel. there are already two movies based on it: "the last man on earth" with vincent price, and "omega man". the novel is actually the granddaddy of all survival horror stories/movies; "night of the living dead", "28 days/weeks later", and every other zombie/infection apocalypse type story all owe a nod to it.

I was planning to take my boys this weekend. It looks like it'll be good. The wife is torn.

I guess I would hold back on the boys (14 and under IMHO should stay home) Wife will not like it.

I thought the move was OK ....good rental....(I just ordered the non-movie cover book)
the guns in the movie where awesome.

thinking the chick had an xd.....but I'm biased.

The movie is growing on me
Cant wait for the book

After watching the remastered "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Patton," I've come to the conclusion that CGI has utterly destroyed an entire generation of movies. It's utter, complete and total GARBAGE.

100% agree. While I love technology, and am quite advanced in it, I really dislike CGI substitutions. there is nothing like seeing 10,000 REAL people amassed together.

probably one of the utter worst CGI moments I have seen was in "TROY" where they show what looks like a million identital ships sailing on an ocean. it was utterly ridiculous.

They're making a The Earth Abides movie?

That's such a great book.
Hopefully, they've been talking about it almost as long as I Am Legend, and they had started on Legend back in the mid nineties with completely different casting and very different script but shelved it till now.
The script for their original remake (oxymoron or non sequitur?) of Legend was available online a couple of years ago. It was slated to be made in the UK I think.

The problem with Earth Abides is that only a miniseries could cover that much ground adequately.

Based on the book by Richard Matheson "I am Legend".

First Movie."The Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price.

Next Movie "The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston.

Read the book. Seen both these movies.

I love SHTF movies and programs: The Mad Max movies, Jeremiah on Showtime, Jericho. I'm planning on seeing this one as soon as I can.

I thought it was a really good movie, the wife loved it also. But I have the feeling the ending was changed before the movie was released. SPOILERS if you haven't seen it yet

I think the whole "bit" of the woman and her son escaping to find a survival colony was added to give it e "upbeat ending". I remember seeing scenes in a preview where Will Smith was surrounded by the creatures, and he made the statement "I can save you all" as they "growled" right in his face. My guess is the original ending went on from there with the creatures killing him, because from their point of view they didn't need "saved". I bet that tested as too "down" of an ending, so a new last fifteen minutes was shot, adding the woman/boy. On that same note, I thouht it was made clear the island was quarantined and cut off. So how did this woman just drive in? And once a few hours had gone past and Smith hadn't appeared at mid day, why would she have hung around the docks waiting for dark and the arrival of the creatures?

I thought the ending was a little too rushed, convenient and ham-fisted. But the first 3/4 of the movie was pretty good. I think it would have been more realistic if he carried some mags for his weapon, if the cars weren't so spic-and-span clean, and if his M16 actually sounded like an M16.

If you think about it, they made a remark in the movie about how the infected humans acted like they had rabies. Dogs and some other animals do have a disease that will turn them into zombie-like killers. We are lucky that there isn't a virus that turns humans into rabid killers, but anything can happen so just cross your fingers.

Only UV light Craw not just any light

Xenon flash lamps output light into the UV spectrum and at intensities high enough to ignite flammables within very short range.

And you can buy UV specific lamps for airborne pathogens. I have one in my A/C return. Works wonders. The packaging has multiple safety warnings about looking at the bulb when lit.

OK so wanna bet how many mall ninjas are running off to put a UV light on their tacticools?

HAHA

:D

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm planning on it.

One question: Are they zombies or vampires?

Might seem like a pointless query on the surface, but it's really important when choosing weapons. Zombies are destoyed by "removing the head or destroying the brain", where vampires need to be staked through the heart, or decapitated and re-buried with their head between their legs. A .223 would be just dandy for head shots on slow, shuffling zombies a la George Romero, but pretty much useless against vampires. Unless you handloaded some wooden bullets...

gotta go, I hear the nurse coming
:)

A prime example of a movie that was re-done and turned out far far better was "The Thing"
The original in black and white, was a pretty good movie, but did not follow John W Campbell's story ("Who goes There?") very well at all. some pioneering technique in it though.
However, the re-make with Kurt Russel, was almost the entire story to a T.
Very well done, and very very spooky.
None of the three versions of the movie are really top notch.
Especially considering that he could have used Ryker's Island as a fortress.
Or moved down the coast line to NC or so, and live on one of the barrier Islands.
Or the Keys. Travel in an armored personnel carrier from the NG armory.
Or drive a large boat down there.
