OK, I finally got around to buying another shotgun to replace the Mossberg 500 I sold just over 2 years ago. I was thinking about a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 but if I could find one at a price that seemed ok I also planned to consider a Mossberg 590 or Benelli.
Well, I bought a Benelli Nova. It was set up how I wanted it- short smooth-bore barrel (it is a 24" barrel I think but it seems about as short and handy as the ~20" Mossbergs and Remingtons) and rifle sights (it has ghost rings). It only has a 4 shot mag, but 4+1 in the chamber of 12ga buck or heavy bird shot should be enough for most HD situations (and I do have my 9 round .45LC Winchester 94 loaded for HD most of the time)- still, I might get an extended mag (I think I can get extentions in anything from 1 to 3 more rounds). I am also thinking about getting the Tritium night sight inserts for the ghost ring sights. I'm not sure about the recoil reduction device- probably not really needed but it would make it a little easier to shoot.
I picked it up at 8PM so I couldn't try it out, but I plan to get to the range tomorrow. The pump action feels very smooth and solid and the gun feels well made. Everyplace my hands are supposed to be on the gun, it feels like it was made for my hands. I hope it shoots well- I do remember my first shots with the Mossy when I felt like I was in heaven. I loved it, and I was mad I waited so long to buy a shotgun- I'm not sure why I've waited so long to replace it.
I am excited about having another shotgun finally. Really the only drawback is that I bought this particular model without much research (I knew that Benelli generally was high end and relatively expensive and I was mainly looking for the Mossy 500 or Rem 870 or the Mossy 590 at the high end). I paid $335 which turns out to be full MSRP (the slug model MSRP is $500 but the smooth-bore is $335). Oh well, I'm happy enough to be back in shotguns that this isn't really bothering me. Now I guess I should start looking into an 870 and a Mossy 590 to go with it, maybe a nice O/U...
