North Korea has 100 N-weapons aimed at US, propagandist claims
Sun May 4, 1:24 AM ET

SYDNEY (AFP) - North Korea (news - web sites) has at least 100 nuclear missiles aimed at the United States and will use them if new economic sanctions are imposed against it, a propagandist for the Stalinist state claimed.

Kim Myong Chol, who styles himself executive director of the Centre for Korea-American Peace, told Australia's Channel Nine network Sunday: "It's quite obvious North Korea may have minimum 100 nuclear warheads, maximum 300.

"They all lock onto American cities."

Kim, who rejoices in the title "unofficial spokesman for North Korea", was speaking in an interview recorded overseas, although it was unclear where.

He claimed the nuclear technology used to produce the missiles had been tested in Pakistan and the weapons had been made before Pyongyang's non-proliferation agreement with the adminstration of former US president Bill Clinton (news - web sites) in 1994. They did not therefore breach international agreements, he maintained.

Told that Pakistan had denied the claim it was implicated -- which he has made previously -- he said: "Of course they must deny that."

Kim, who said he was flattered that the Western media labelled him unofficial spokesman for the Pyongyang regime, was asked if North Korea intended to use the weapons if the United States did not give in to its diplomatic and economic deamands.

"If the US attacks North Korea, North Korea will definitely use those nuclear weapons against the US mainland," he replied.

Would it also use them if an economic embargo was imposed?

"Yes, definitely," he said. "North Korea will use those nuclear weapons against the US mainland if America imposes additional economic sanctions on North Korea."

He also rejected a charge by Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer last week that an official of North Korea's ruling political party was aboard a North Korean ship accused of smuggling heroin to Australia.

The freighter, Pong Su, was boarded and seized by Australian special forces troops on April 20 after a chase that began when it allegedly unloaded the drugs off southeastern Australia five days earlier.

Some 26 North Korean crew remain in custody charged with helping to import 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of pure heroin into Australia.

"I'm afraid the Australian Foreign Minister is entirely wrong," Kim said.

These wackjobs really keep pushing don't they?

DPRK has a hundred nukes that can hit CONUS?

Yeah right, when...

My understanding was that they best they could yield at this point in time was material for 2 nukes.

They just want attention, respect and aid.

It's one of those things where you're about 98% sure the other guy is full of crap, but the 2% is really frightening. I'll bet these guys are decent poker players.

Whatever number of nukes they do have, and whatever small number of those could actually hit the U.S., they're trying to bluff the world into giving them time to make more.

IIRC, no strategic weapons system has ever been tested as a whole.

And, too, there's the question of fratricide.

Not to mention the effectiveness of the neutron bomb.

So, lets believe what they're saying, and launch first!

Hate to be the one to bust everyone's little bubble, but it is unclassified material that North Korea has ballistic missles that can reach the western half of the USA. This is according to CSPAN testimony from the CIA. I saw it and the question was asked by Senator Bayh (D-IN) if the North Koreans had missles and warheads that could hit the USA mainland, Alaska, or Canada. The CIA guys huddled a second, and said that it is unclassified data that the North definitely has the capability, and missles and warheads in stock. I did not hear how many though. But one is enough to ruin my day.

And the DPRK is crazy enough to let those dogs loose.

USA would cease to even be a player on the world stage. The world economic system would fall. Bad things would happen.

.... and South Korea would become an island. NORAD would detect those suckers while they're in the middle of the Pacific, and hopefully we might be able to use our (experimental?) missle defense shield. Even if the nukes never reached the USA, we would rain fire and radioactive waste on them.

There are an enormous number of variables involved in launching a transpolar ICBM shot (which is the most likely way the NK's would go, since a west - east shot would be even more problematic). Since they're threatening to launch an unarmed shot of that nature just to prove they can, they're probably trying to prove it to themselves as well. It seems to me that the best thing the US could do would be to redeploy those PAC-3 Patriot batteries coming back from Israel, to cover the (easily predictable) transpolar routes. At that point, simply shooting down the incoming ICBM and then publicly shaming the NKs as one would 10 year old boys caught stealing apples from a neighbor's tree, would cause the NK's massive loss of face, build our standing both among our allies in the Far East, and else where, and very likely bring the NK's to a more realitic assessment of their chances against us (as in none or less than that....)

Well, Arlin, that response might be worthy of The High Road. But it's inconceivable to me that the U.S. would respond to a NK missile attack with anything less than total military annihilation: not necessarily the NK population, but to at least wipe out any military capability. Ugly scenario indeed.
