I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 guns

Who am I to tell you there's anything wrong with that?

I don't think people are commenting on whether it is right for him.

I think people are commenting on the statement "I couldn't imagine owning more than..." which implies that he didn't understand why OTHER people would own more than 4 or 5. Most of the comments here seem to try to explain why.

I couldn't imagine owning more than 4-5 guns
Then you simply have no imagination, or don't like guns as much as most of us do.

.22 LR
.22 Mag
9MM
.38 Super
.38 Spl
.357
.400 Corbon

Dang. I am already over the limit and have not even listed all my pistol calibers, much less rifle........;)

Diversity. It can be a beautiful thing. I would get bored out of my mind with only 5 guns, and be miserable wanting others.

OneBigA$$MistakeAmerica

If he, and others, had his way, it would be zero, which is the main reason to have at least 5.

Hmmm, let me see...shoulder, pocket, IWB, OWB, ankle...dang, I think I got your 5 covered right here. We'll pop open the safes and count the rest once I get back to the house.;)

Personally I like guns, like to shoot them, and to own them. The only thing limiting my collection is my lack of disposable income!

I do own 2 motorcycles however. The one I got was my first from 5 years ago. It was cheap and needed a lot of work and eventually I outgrew it and needed something bigger than a learner size dirt bike. I put more money and time into it, than its worth, so it doesn't seem worth selling. I've sold a couple along the way and have one other one now; my main Harley.

An expose on Harley ownership.

Wow there's actually someone on here that watches South Park. I started watching about 1/2 of it and then I realized why I stopped watching it when I was 19. Incidentally, I've got my comic book collection going in the trade rifle/shotgun thread for any rifle if interested. If you think the sissies find motorcycles obnoxious -- just wait till you get a load of what they think about firearms owners.

I reckon I could do OK with just one rifle, but assuming "guns" means all firearms, four or five is pretty sparse. For one thing, I want a .22 handgun to serve for low-cost practice for my serious carry handgun, and I want a spare of my serious carry handgun. That combo, alone, makes three handguns. I wear a badge for a living, and must furnish my own weapons, so this does affect my choices. Add one rifle to that, and we are up to four firearms. Add a good pump shotgun, and we are at five.

Because "serious carry handgun" implies a large, service-type weapon, well, what about a more compact handgun for deeper concealment? What about a longer-barreled handgun for hunting? That adds two more to the mix.

Ideally, I also want to have a .22 LR rifle that works somewhat like my primary rifle. Believe me, .22 rimfire weapons pay for themselves if a guy shoots much.

I have typed, in these forums, on topic covering the "one gun" issue, that I could, in theory, get by with just one firearm, and that would be a 4" Ruger GP100 in .357 magnum. I would have had to "grandfather" that GP100 about twelve years ago, when my employing agency went to all .40 autos, except for existing duty handguns, already on our qual list.

But, even if a guy believes in keeping just one gun around, or just one of each type, what happens when that one gun has to go back to the factory for a major parts replacement, or a recall?

Just my rambling $0.02.

Golden: Motorcycles?

You would have enjoyed a photo posted within the last year.
The guy has an "AK" strapped to his back as he rides his cycle on a crowded interstate. Can somebody provide this picture (I don't have the skills)?

Another guy described how he bought a MN 91/30 and with a motorcycle to ride home, could not carry it in a box or bag.
In downtown Zurich, Switzerland in '77, nobody looked twice as a guy (reserves) leisurely pedaled his bicycle with either a Sig-Sauer (?) or FN (?) on his back.
It looked like a foreign semi-auto.

Have six, but my four military surplus will never be enough.

I met a guy that had 20 M1 Garands.....an another guy I just found out has 49 M1 Garands....obviously, they have a bigger imagination than the OP...LOL.

Some folks collect coins, some stamps, but none of those go bang!
Now that's the fun part! All of mine get fired and cleaned once a month.
We make it a family day me the wife and my son......Life is good!

The wife and I trade off we'll do a shoot & cookout, one month she will cook, I will reload.
Next month I will cook she reloads.
My son helps where he is needed.

I don't think people are commenting on whether it is right for him.

I sure am not.

I just have gotten myself involved in various shooting sports, hunting at least some of my own meat, training a versatile hunting dog, etc., while still seeing firearms as a means of self-defense for me and my family. 4-5 wouldn't be sufficient for these activities, mainly since "firearm" covers a number of completely different items that are not interchangeable.:)

I have to agree that anyone who couldn't imagine it has little imagination.

If one hunts they likely will have at least for or five:

A gun a peice for Small game, varmints, medium game, and heavy game. That's 4 right there.

If one hunts birds they will have at least one shotgun, and it is not a stretch to have a different upland game gun than waterfowl gun. Many people like to have more specialized guns within those subdivisions. So a hunter might easily have 1-4 shotguns for birds.

If one also hunts shotgun only areas for deer they will likely buy a slug gun.

There could easily be distinctions made within the categories of varmints small, medium, and large game. Also varying terrain for various species might make a particular gun better suited than another.

Some people like to hunt certain game with revolvers or carry a revolver with them in them in the field. They might own a big bore revolver.

For hunting alone one might well own a dozen guns or more. Now think about the fact that some people have kids, or spouses, or friends they might want to take hunting with them. They might own some guns they can use. Also people who pay big money to go on distant hunting adventures often take a spare gun.

That was just hunting. They same person might be into target shooting. If one is serious about these things target guns are very different from many hunting guns and thus they will have a few guns for this.

Some people like three gun shooting: They will need at least three guns just for that. Of course if they are interested in shooting different divisions (or having a back up because when you really use your guns they can break) they will likely have more

If the person likes cowboy action shooting it is the same thing

The same person might also have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Here is another gun (or more).

One might have a dedicated HD gun (or guns). Is this not the same as what they would use for three gun? Not forcedly, particularly if what they are shooting in three gun is open class race guns. Further even if it is the same. If a spouse is away shooting 3 gun with the HD gun that could potentially be a problem.

There are of course many more types of shooting sports that each have their particular requirements and equipment.

Lastly some people just like guns and enjoying owning a variety of them.

If you cannot imagine owning more than 6 guns or so there are probably a few things at work. First, your use of guns is very narrow and your exposure to how other people use guns and shooting sports is likely nearly non existent. And/or you are an egocentric person that thinks that the way they do things is how everyone else does or should do them too. Either way it is a position that stems from extreme ignorance. Note that none of that is to make a normative statement about how many guns you or anyone else should own.

an another guy I just found out has 49 M1 Garands....obviously, they have a bigger imagination than the OP...

That may be, but I don't think owning 49 of the same firearms is evidence of imagination! *lol*

I guess its all a matter of taste and how into it you really are. This is my list:

10/22 Bench (have)
10/22 Hunter (have)
AR15 w/ 22 conversion (have)
P226 9mm w/ 22, .40 conversion (have)
G20 10mm w/ 22 .40 conversion (have)
SP01 .40 w/ 22 conversion
Vz58 7.62x39mm
DW Heritage .45 w/ 22 conversion
LR308 7.62x51mm
MCS 10mm w/ 9mm conversion
FN SLP 12ga

I don't have anything cheap on my list and I don't care about getting just tons of crap guns. I just want all my guns to be exactly what I want. Each one so far is heavily customized.

Reasons to own many guns of various and similar calibers and sizes...

1) If you lose or break yours, you have an immediate backup. Buying a gun is often a hassel and cannot be done usually on holidays, nights, etc.

2) If you use yours in a self defense shooting the police may confiscate it pending the outcome of the investigation. Nice to have an immediate replacement.

3) During periods of civil unrest, it's nice to arm loved ones and neighbors. Also, NICS may be shut down until order is restored.... Nice to have 'em.

4) Proficiency in a variety of arms may save your life some day. Worldwide, kidnappings of Americans is lucrative business - South America, Mexico, Central America, Europe, Asia, Middle East, you name it. If you are American you are a target. Understanding how to use many weapons - and understanding their limits - could save your skin. I'm personally familiar with how to operate, and the limitations, of most modern guns. But I can always learn more and always try to learn more.

5) Looking back, it would have been great to have the foresight to buy up full auto Uzis and M16s and AK47s cheaply when Americans could, just a few decades ago. Now you'd be super lucky to own one, and if you had owned several you could have sold them for a mint! WE are fortunate to have the right and ability to buy up guns now while they are cheap and easily and widely available. That won't always be the case. Think about it, you can buy and state of the art rifle for 1 weeks salary! That is really amazing, considering they are basically unavailable for the rest of the 1st world, and you wouldn't want to live in the 2nd and 3rd world nations where they are available.

Everytime I buy, I get a twinkle in my eye and love the feeling of both supporting the 2nd Amendment AND making a liberal weep someplace in the world!

I could probably have all my NEEDS covered by just three or four, but that would be way less fun.
I just my wish list for black powder guns is probably going to number over ten.

I think the same way you do, I like having one gun for each specific purpose, but as time goes by, I could see myself breaking them down by range and also starting to collect them to have them for my boys.

I have a Nylon 66 knockoff, but I don't like the trigger.
My dad gave me his old 10/22, but I want a .22 lr AR upper to train my soldiers with.
I still use one shotgun for everything.
I want to set up one AR lower for defensive uses, and another for varminting.
I want to set up one AR-10 lower for .308 and .243 uppers, MAYBE a .260, if I doscover something I can't do with the other two.
I have a Howa .270 I will keep for occasional elk hunting.
If I get more serious about elk hunting, I'll get some flavor of magnum.
I use my 1911 for all pistol applications, and I have a .22 conversion kit for it, but I would love a good 4" Python one day.
I have my highly modded SKS that I use as my main desert and woods gun.

I see all of these guns having a distinct purpose, I don't neglect any of them. I know guys with over a hundred guns. Some shoot all of them frequently. Some almost never shoot any of them. FOR ME, I don't ever see myself affording a gun I don't plan on shooting.

I just wish I would have set my limit at four or five calibers...Never considered only having that many guns. However I would set a limit if only I could have an STG I or II.......... or FlAk 37.

Only 4 to 5 guns... Yikes!!!

Oh! I get it... This thread was started by my wife.

You really had me going there dear. I'll have to get you back on this one snookems.

And/or you are an egocentric person that thinks that the way they do things is how everyone else does or should do them too. Either way it is a position that stems from extreme ignorance.

This grabbed my attention after reading some of the OP's posts about how our military should operate in todays battlefield.

I keep 4-5 guns in my car on the way to work. Just kidding.
I think you posted this to stir the pot. Congrats, it worked. Fun post that get's people talking.
