I had been contemplating trading out of a couple of my lesser-used firearms, an H&R Topper 12G and a Savage Mark II-G .22lr....
I have plenty of other shotguns, especially 12 gauges (Parker VH SxS, original iron frame NEF 12-gauge single, Rem 870 Exp. Supermag, H&R TDC 20G), so I wouldn't miss the 12-G Topper
I have a couple .22's I'm very happy with, a Marlin 25 bolt action, and Ruger 10/22, I've never been completely happy with the Savage Mark II-G, I bought it due to it's affordability, when what I *really* wanted was the BTVS model...
I can replace the Savage at any time, with the BTVS that I wanted in the first place
I was in KTP on Sunday, and discovered that H&R is making a Buffalo Classic rifle with a 20" carbine barrel chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge, so that got me to thinking
Today, I discovered they had an *unfired* used one in the gun racks , it had a little surface rust from handling on the barrel and receiver, that would clean off with some 000 steel wool and some CLP, the wood was in perfect shape, cut-checkered American Black Walnut, nice grain, marbling and depth, and a nice case-colored crescent steel buttplate
It was love at first sight
And the best bet is it was a straight-across trade, yes I gave up two (redundant) long guns, but they were dupes of what I already own, and I was missing a hunting rifle in the collection, now that hole has been filled, and since it shoots a cartridge I already shoot, and more importantly, *RELOAD* for, it's not going to cost me anything more to feed, as I already have the ammo for it
I love the .45 Colt cartridge, I have a 7.5" Ruger New Model Blackhawk Convertible that takes the cartridge, and I love it's combination of big , heavy bullet and soft, rolling recoil, controllable, comfortable gun to shoot, and the 45 Colt is an incredibly versatile cartridge, able to be loaded from ultralight powderpuffs all the way up to .44 Mag+ levels, 45 Colt is a great cartridge
Now I have a rifle to keep my Blackhawk company, and this rifle will fill the role of range toy/hunting rifle/and potentially a HD gun, yes it's a single shot, but we live out in the country, and we stand more a risk of getting overrun by stampeding livestock, lobsters, or hermit crabs, not the two-legged variety of predators, so the single-shot is not a drawback...
besides, any two-legged goblin finding itself staring down that imposing cavernous muzzle had best start rethinking it's current career choice
I've always loved the H&R singles, pure simplicity, functionality, and reliability, this is the first centerfire rifle I've had from them, and I'm sure it won't be the last
Anyone know if the CR-45LC is built on the stronger rifle frame (SB2?) I remember reading somewhere that it was...
