I need a hand, here. I have acquired (inheritance) a nice, shiny Mosin Nagant. Actually, it's like new. Still got that thick factory grease all over the top of the bolt, and the (internal) mag spring is caked in it.

The extent of my knowledge of this carbine is its chambering (7.62x54R). I have looked at various sites on the subject and have learned that there are several models bearing the Mosin name. Point of this is, I want to know exactly what I have.

SO, any Mosin experts, let me know what you need to know about this thing. I can provide digital pictures if necessary (p.m. an email addy to me) in quality resolution.

Thanks for any help!

Here are some of the basic questions you can answer that will help the resident mosin experts help you out.

  1. How long is the barrel?
  2. Is there a permanently attached folding bayonet?
  3. Is the receiver round or hexagonal?
  4. How is the rear sight marked?

You can find out here: http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinID.htm

Also the main page http://7.62x54r.net/ (turns out it's the same page as the ".com" reference above!) has lots of great articles on the various Mosins. Unfortunately, reading about them only makes you want to have more. A basic collection should start with a 91/30, then an M38, and then an M44. After that, add a room to the house; it only gets worse :D

Lovely

Thanks, George S. As if I don't already have a Beretta problem, and I'm coming down with a case of the 1911's, now you're telling me I'm en route to a wife-threatening illness called, what, the Mosin's?!? Just for that, you're responsible for 50% of my divorce costs.:neener:

Thanks, everyone, for the links.

JesseL, here's some answers for your questions:

1. Barrel length (which, I assume, means from the end of the muzzle to right at the front of the receiver) looks like 17 1/4".
2. There is a permanently attached folding bayonet.
3. The receiver is round.
4. The rear sight (which is elevation adjustable with a button on each side) is ten-step with a number on each step (1-10).

Also, there are some markings directly behind the sight. First (closest to rear sight), is a diamond with what looks like "PM" and "3" under that (all inside the diamond). Next, there's an "11" inside a circle. Then, there's the marking "AD5282" (which also appears on the bolt and the buttplate). Last, there is a VERY FAINTLY stamped "28*" which does include the asterisk.

I'll check the websites for the markings, but if any of these answers triggers a response, let me know!

Thanks for your help, guys!
