I decided to buy a handgun that had no purpose than just to have fun shoooting it.

Very few of my guns have specific purpose other than I like them. I like to shoot collect and take them out and look at them. I like opening the safe and seeing the fruit of all my laboring. The rest of my money is lost on bills and such so its nice to see a little reward other than living.

Since I posted this I bought a Governor, M&P 15 'Sport', and a 2" 632-2. None of these serve any purpose other than 'fun'.

I can't think of any "need" fulfilled by a single-shot rolling-block actioned .357 Magnum target pistol, other than it looks neat, and I've always kinda wanted one.

The S&W 686 is an excellent choice for any type shooting. It comes with a nice action from the factory and is extremely accurate.

I bought a 686 for no reason, also. It has since become one of my favorite guns. If there were some kind of 686 club I could join...

since I replied weeks ago, I have ordered a Nagant revolver and the Phoenix 22 kit with two barrels. I'm not really sure why I ordered them but I am really looking forward to them.

I'd say that all my handguns are for fun. I shoot them in competitions because I enjoy shooting in competitions more than I like just standing and plugging paper. But I enjoy variety as much as I enjoy the focus that comes in competition. So all my guns other than a few get their "moment in the sun" in rotation for match duties. The few that seldom come out other than for target shooting are soon going to be up for sale.
