rifle back in the late 80s to 90s. I did see old pics of Militia's mostly armed with SKSs modified hicap mags and some ARs, mini 14s, scoped rifles and shotguns . Today the AR type reign supreme in small carbine firearms. Thanks to the surge in sales since 9 /11. And SKS prices have creeped up to the $300 -450 range depending on condition and country of origin.

I love the sks. Reliable, cheap, and decently accurate battle rifle for $300...what's not to love! I've seen recent documentaries where Taliban fighters still use them as we speak.

I bought two Russian SKS's when they first hit the shores in large numbers in the early 90's. They were around $100 each, and I bought them on a lark. They've turned out to be really fun rifles to own and shoot. Darn good all purpose rifle too.

It's funny how Mosins, AKs, SKS have become so popular given their use against us in various wars and police actions.

We're just buying the guns, not the man behind the trigger. They are good solid firearms, that do their job well.

I also own Lugers, C-96 Broomhandles, and a WWII bringback Walther PP my Dad brought back from Germany.

Nico: Think about the qualities that make a good guerilla weapon. They must be durable, simple to use, and able to function in a wide range of conditions without flaw, I think the SKS family, the Mosins, and the Mausers have all proven to have those qualities so it should not be too much of a puzzle to understand why people who enjoy shooting would want them. My nephew was in the Special Forces of the US Army and he carried an AK often as a second weapon in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Hardware does not have political allegiance to any doctrine, only the operator.

^ $100 SKS? I remember seeing the lowest one I remember being a piece of junk at $180. Where are you and are they still selling for that little?

yes i would like to know where i can find these 100$ sks. i cant find one cheaper than 250

I own 2 chineese sks both are great rifles but past the 250-300 mark you may be better off looking at a stock saiga

I have a paratrooper ,a 500 sporster, and a mak 90 with ak furniture. Sold all my ar's when Obama got in. Just haven't seen any reason to replace them. Guess if we had a poddle invasion I might need one.lol

Well by gosh you can call me a redneck all you want. I like my SKS. It is built like a tank. Which is more than I can say about an AK. Plus the extra barrel length does help the 7.62x39 round with a tad more speed than one gets out of a 16" barrel.

If you know where I can pick up any SKS for $100 please let me know.

I got all the countries of origin except for the Romanian. Century had them in VG condition for $100 in 2004 and i didnt jump on it. I need to find one to complete my collection.

The SKS is a fine $100 rifle. At any price higher than that it's overpriced.
How does that compute.? A Mosin-Nagant rifle isn't even a "fine $100" rifle. Even a Hi-Point carbine isn't a "$100 rifle" and an SKS or Mosin (or many other miltary surplus arms) are FAR better made out of higher quality materials.

$100 may be all you can stand to spend on one, but the fact that you (once upon a time) could get one that cheaply is only due to quriks of advancing technology -vs.- obsolecence of older designs. No American manufacturer could even come close to putting together a sledge-hammer-reliable semiauto 7.62 rifle like an SKS for $100 -- or the equivalent bolt gun to a Mosin-Nagant, either.

Military surplus has done a lot to arm vast numbers of American citizens cheaply -- but it also has distorted our view of value and cost.

Most owners would put a Ruger Mini-30 on about the same level as an SKS, vis-a-vis accuracy and reliability. The fit and finish edge go to the Ruger, but otherwise they're near about the same thing. No one would call a Mini-30 a "$100 rifle."

I remember going to the gunshows in Little Rock at the fairgrounds in the mid 90s and seeing them sell for $77 and I purchased a few of them. I have sold all of them but 1. They are as reliable as any ruger mini 14 or ranch rifle, even though the sks is not as good looking it ,to me, is still a great carbine length rifle. Stlll a deal at $300.

The reason it has been dubbed the Redneck gun, is due to a big group of fools with cameras "talkin bout thier hog huntin gun" or "grab my SKS an go inna woods" or bubba "I modified it to shoot full auto with a banana clip". Ugh....:banghead:

I have a Russian, un molested SKS. I have done a trigger job and it shoots nearly as well as my Underwood M1 carbine. Ten rounds is plenty, if I need more, then I should be running and not shooting.
